GEORGIAN FONTS

This are several Georgian fonts for IBM compatible computers with Windows [3.x & 95], Apple Macintosh computers, NeXT, and SUN(Solaris) Workstations. If you have some information on other sourses, or have some coments, please e-mail me at [email protected].

One should also know that due to the lack of standards there are two basic keyboard layouts. I refer to them as Georgian keyboard layout (as in standard Georgian typewriter) and Lathin keyboard layout.

Installing Georgian Fonts for Windows 3.x and Windows 95

To start you should have the following files available:

rs_font.zip (by Mr. Reno Siradze) and/or fonts.zip & vgafix1g.zip (by Shavlego) also ge_key.zip (Keyboard Driver Software).

Unziping Files

You should have pkunzip.exe or winzip to unzip the downloaded files. I also assume that you can unzip files in a specified directories.

Unzip rs_font.zip and fonts.zip in the directory of your convinience. Lets say you unziped them in c:\g-fonts\.

Make directory for the keyboard driver (e.g. c:\key_ge\), and unzip the ge_key.zip into that directory.

Font Installation

For Windows 95

  • Click "Start" > "Settings" > "Control Panel". Double click "Fonts folder." You should get the window with all the fonts installed on your system.
  • You can do two things now. You can either drag and drop the specific font files (e.g. siradze.ttf, rswwwnt1.ttf, ...) in to this window or form "File" menu choose "Install New Font..." that will give you a dialogue window "Add Fonts." Now you can select the fonts from your directory (e.g. c:\g-fonts\) and click "OK." That's it.

For Windows 3.x

  • From "Main" program group double click on "Control Panel," then double click on "Fonts." You should get the window with all the fonts installed on your system.
  • To install your new fonts click "Add..." and you should get "Add Fonts" dialoge window. Select the directory where you unziped the font files (e.g. c:\g-fonts\) and click on "Select All" and "OK." Close all windows and you are done!

Driver Installation

  • After you unziped it your keyboared driver is already installed. You just need to configure it. To load the driver start app16.exe. The icon of your driver should appeare on your desktop.
  • Left(win3.x)/Right(win95) botton click on the icon and you should get a menu. Select "Menu Configuration."
  • For standard Georgian keyboard layout: Click on "Alternate 1"
    From "Keyboard File" choose ge_gcuk1.wkb
    From "Icon" choose Georgia
In "Menu Name" type Georgian ST (ST for standard keyboard layout)
  • For non-standard Lathin keyboard layout: Click on "Alternate 2"
    From "Keyboard File" choose ge_mix1.wkb
    From "Icon" choose Georgia
In "Menu Name" type Georgian US (US for lathin keyboard layout)
  • One more thing: you can alternate between the English (or any other) and Georgian keyboard drivers by pressing the Scroll Lock key.

Hi all,

Untill now there were not a Georgian multilingual fonts. Now it seems, that soon we will get more different standards...

As far as I know, the government working group(8 members) was created in Georgia for just this. They should define the new standard for ISO and UNICODE. The work should be completed by the end of this year.

If you use Win 95, you should be using internet explorer ;-)

So, first you need to install RSwwwNET font in your system. To do so, first go to "My Computer", then "Control Panel" then "Fonts", then press ALT-F and select "install new font", then insert the disk with RSwwwNET and select this disk, or if you have it on your HDD, show the path to it. if "Copy fonts to fonts folder" isn't checked, do so, and press OK.

This is first half, now you need some wrestling with Internet Explorer. This is the one of many reasons, why Navigator is far better.

Go to "View" then to "options"

Select "Proportional font" and choose RSwwNET. At time I was doing installation, this fonts wouldn't allow fixed font support, but if it does now, try to find the same name in "Fixed font". Clikc OK.

You will be able to read WWW pages(Proportional). I am not sure about Newsgroup, though, (I don't have the 95) but try, it could work. In netscape you simply select option, which will use Proportional (AKA TTF) font for newsgroups, but in IE it could be fixed.

BTW, Mr. Siradze's announcement for WIN NT was very interesting, but there are some problems accessing this particular directory. Is it UNICODE? Also driver is good, Georgian version of UNICODE would be even important. Because it was done for MAC, and I think, for MAC it should be UNICODE, is UNICODE ready for NT?

Regards, Zurab.
