from The Cricket International July 1998 - (thanks Cindy)
MOST MEMORABLE MATCH OR MATCHES
I think your début is always a game you will never forget but when it comes to
most memorable my début for Warwickshire would be the one that stands out. I
managed to get four wickets in four balls. Realizing your dream and playing for
your country is also right up there. A memorable personal performance was at
Faisalabad in October 1997 - we won the series by beating Pakistan in the Third
Test when they only needed 145 to win, and I took 5 for 37 in the second
innings.
WORST MATCH OR MATCHES
Losing the quarter-final World Cup match against the West Indies in 1996. We had
been playing so well that I fancied our chances.
CRICKETING HEROES
Clive Rice, Rupert Hanley and my uncle Graeme Pollock.
GREATEST INFLUENCES
Natal coach Graham Ford for his coaching; Malcolm Marshall - I learnt a lot from
him and he instilled confidence into me to back my own ability; and my dad - he
got me interested in cricket, and then picked me for South Africa!
CURRENT PLAYERS ADMIRED
Steve Waugh and Allan Donald.
YOUNG CRICKETERS FOR THE FUTURE
Pat Symcox - he's got years left in him.
CRICKETING AMBITION
To help take South Africa to the top of Test and one-day cricket, and on a
personal note to perform well with both bat and ball in both forms of cricket.
FAVORITE GROUNDS
The Wanderers - it has a great atmosphere and we are always well supported
there; Edgebaston became special after playing a season for Warwickshire; MCG -
it's a special ground to play at on Boxing Day.
LEAST FAVORITE GROUNDS
Buffalo Park in East London - it's usually a difficult wicket to bowl or bat on;
my old club ground, Varsity 4 - I don't think there is a venue that gets that
hot anywhere.
MAIN COMPLAINTS ABOUT CRICKET
The amount of travelling; we spend so much time at airports, on buses and
airplanes, and outside our country of birth. People may think it's great to go
to these places but you never really get to see the sights.
CHANGE TO IMPROVE THE GAME AND ITS APPEAL
Compulsory declaration after 125 overs of the first innings of a Test Match
might get the appeal back to Test Cricket. I don't think the one-day game needs
many changes.
FUNNIEST MOMENT IN CRICKET
The ball going through Pat Symcox's stumps in Pakistan, and Lance Klusener
losing his shoe running between the wickets and then trying to crawl back to the
wicket after falling.
MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT IN LIFE
Calling my teacher granny, and going out to bat in a One-Day International with
my pants the wrong way round.
WHO OUTSIDE OF CRICKET WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET ?
My wife, and Jack Nicklaus.
SOMEONE YOU WOULD LEAST LIKE TO MEET
The person who bats like Lara, bowls like Donald and fields like Rhodes.
HOBBIES AND INTERESTS
Playing golf, listening to music or just trying to take my mind off cricket.
OTHER SPORTS PEOPLE ADMIRED
Ernie Els has been amazing for golf and South Africa; Carl Lewis, one of the
best athletes ever seen and has done wonders for his faith.
FAVORITE ACTORS AND ACTRESSES
Sandra Bullock, Courtney Cox, and my niece.
FAVORITE TV PROGRAMMES
Wildlife documentaries, Friends
FAVORITE FILMS
Cool Runnings, While You Were Sleeping.

FAVORITE HOLIDAY PLACE

FAVORITE HOTEL

home.
FAVORITE RESTAURANT
McDonald's (only joking!); Langoustine by the Sea in Durban, my home town.
WHAT CLOTHES DO YOU PREFER TO WEAR?
Ones that fit - I'm not really a labels man myself.
HOW IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SPEND A DAY/NIGHT?
Putting in a good performance to help win the World Cup for South Africa at
Lord's in 1999.
