Pollock, Simons On The Cards For SA

from supercricket.co.za June 09 2002 (thanks Jenny)

Shaun Pollock is certain to retain the national cricket captaincy when the United Cricket Board announce their management structure on Monday.

Omar Henry, the convener of the national selectors, was not in a position on Sunday to confirm or deny this, saying: "The entire management structure will be announced (Monday), so until then I can't comment."

But all indications are that Pollock, whose captaincy was under scrutiny against Australia in the recent Test and one-day series, will lead the national side to the World Cup next year. His appointment is expected to cover both Tests and one-day internationals.

There had been suggestions that South Africa could follow the lead of Australia by appointing separate captains for Test and one-day cricket.

But when Henry consulted senior national team players on this issue, it is understood Pollock enjoyed support for both roles.

It is almost certain that Western Province coach Eric Simons will take over from Graham Ford as national coach. Simons was one of six recommended candidates for the job.

"The UCB have asked me to meet them today,'' said Simons on Sunday, in a strong indication that he has been rubber-stamped for the job.

Other candidates are Vincent Barnes, Kepler Wessels, Dave Nosworthy, Eldine Baptiste and Ray Jennings.
