UNDER orders from the South African Board not to overwork Shaun
Pollock, Warwickshire had intended to rest him from National League games. But
after their poor start in the championship they were desperate for a win
yesterday and Pollock provided it with impressive assistance from Ian Bell's
best one-day score of 72.
On a grudging surface, Pollock hit the game's only sixes off successive balls
from Ian Hunter and removed the top three Durham batsmen with only 22 on the
board.
Martin Love and Jon Lewis put on 58, before Pollock's return saw four wickets
tamely surrendered for eight runs.
There were three stumpings for Keith Piper, who had already held two catches off
Pollock, whose 25 off 22 balls batting at No 3 did not alter Nick Knight's early
evaluation of the pitch.
Knight hit only two fours in his 40 before Bell took over the mantle of steady
accumulation.
