South African captain Shaun Pollock continued his impressive form
with both bat and ball, although his county side Warwickshire endured mixed
fortunes at the end of another week of cricket in England.
Although Warwickshire were soundly beaten by seven wickets by Leicestershire
at the weekend, Pollock twice defied the the home side's attack with half
centuries in both innings, first top-scoring with 59 and then following up with
66 as Warwickshire made a better fist of their second batting effort. However,
Leicestershire were left with just 94 runs required for victory, which they
managed for the loss of just three wickets.
Pollock also played a key role in Warwickshire's 44-run victory over Durham in
the one-day Norwich Union League on Sunday, making 25 off 23 balls batting at
number three, before claiming 3-29 from nine overs to help his side to a
comfortable victory.
Also performing well in the Norwich Union League was former Gauteng
wicket-keeper batsman Nic Pothas, who struck an unbeaten 53 from 59 balls as
Hampshire ran up 219 for five from their 45 overs before dismissing
Gloucestershire for 173.
Meanwhile Northerns Titans seamer Greg Smith was in sparkling form for Clive
Rice's Nottinghamshire as they beat Essex by seven wickets in the county
championship. Smith took three wickets in the Essex first innings and eight for
53 in the second to finish with the superb match figures of 11 for 74. Nicky
Boje struck an unbeaten 21 in Nottinghamshire's comfortable quest for victory.
And former Free State opening batsman Andrew Gait struck a first innings half
century as his new side Derbyshire ran out eight wicket winners over
Northamptonshire, also in the county championship.
