A Compiling List of Ways to Fade the Urges
There are several sites up on the net with lists of ways to avoid cutting when the urge hits...in fact most of those lists are copied from a main list and pasted to several different sites. Let's start something different. This is a page dedicated to us, with the advice from several different people. If you want to send in what works for you, it will be pasted on to this page with credit given to you. Let's make this list as long as possible...the more options we have the better.
Email me your tips to add to the list. 1. Sing or scream a favorite non-triggering song,so for many people that automatically X's out that all too famous Nine Inch Nails song Hurt.
2. Paint. It doesn't have to be anything in particular, just dribble some paint on a piece of paper.
3. Do not isolate yourself.
4. Rip up paper.
5. Write a note of rage.
6. Drip chocolate syrup over your hand or arm like blood,then lick it up. (ProzacKat)
7. Draw "blood lines" on yourself with a washable marker. (ProzacKat)
8.Go shopping for shoes.
9. Hug someone.
10.Write feelings/emotions out in a journal. Be honest and straightforward.
11.Share the journal with a trusting friend.
12.Listen to trance.
13.Love someone.
14.Listen carefully when someone tells you that they love you, and it doesn't hurt to say it back.
15.Meditate.
16.Visit a pool.
17.Go exercise. Walking, jogging, treadmill or biking.
18.Write a song.
19.Write letters, including all of your emotions.
20.Burn things (make sure this is done in a safe location, and if you are a burner or are tempted to burn yourself, stay away from this technique.)
21.Go for a walk.
22.Play sports.
23.Listen to music.
24.Call significant other.
25.Play an instrument.
26.Use the computer, find a way to keep hands focused.
27.Hit things.
28.If you are a smoker, pick up a cig.
29.Write poetry.
30.Talk to someone.
31.Try not to stay alone.
32.Watch a movie.
33.If you feel that you are safe enough, looking at pictures of self-injury can sometimes help calm one down.
34.Exercise.
35.Sleep.
36.Squeeze an ice cube for three minutes.
37.Scream/cry (don't deny yourself of the right to hold these emotions.)
