My childhood in Libya Libya was a great place to be. I stayed in libya from Class I to Class VI ( 1979 - 1983). We were staying at Tripoli and still I feel that that period was one of the best periods of my life. My father was working for MN Dastur who were building a Steel Plant in Misurata, so sometimes on weekends we visited Misurata. It took approximately 3 and half hours by car through picturesque hilly roads. We had a Volkswagon Beetle. It was such a wonderful car. I studied in Indian Community School, Tripoli. Mr. Ganjoo was the principal at that time. At the annual functions of the school he used to lend his golden voice to recreate characters from Chandalika and other Rabindranath Dance dramas. Speaking of music and how can I forget Mrs Mukherjee our music teacher. She was an excellent teacher. The other teachers who greatly influenced me at that time were Mrs. Hansija (Hindi), Mrs. Bhaskar (English), Mrs Ramanujam(Maths), Sir Swami (Social Studies). I also do remember Mr. Hamsa for his famous thrashings... Ooof! And ofcourse Mr. Sebastien. I had some great friends there. Siddhartha Mukherjee was one such guy. He was simply great. He used to make me laugh so much. I donot know where he is now. Then there was Sumit Garg (famous for his strength), Vinitha Vishwanathan, Daksha Bhaskar, Parag Gupta, Muninder Singh, Bublee (donot remember her surname), Aarti Taneja, Ajay Maurya. Recently I have been able to contact Daksha Bhashar, she is in Canada. But guys and gals of Indian Community school, if you happen to read this article do visit Alumni.net and register your names under this institution. It would be great to get in touch after such a long time. Speaking of Libya and how can I miss out the great beaches. Yes, the sea beaches were simply excellent. Every Friday we used to go to Janjur beach and have a great time. infact I learnt my swimming out there. The speciality of the Mediterranean is that it is so quiet, no great waves. I will be updating this page with much more information on our stay. So do come back to check... For more information on Libya you can check out this Libya site Home |
