Equine beauty, rare divinity
Pricked ears and tossing head
Mane and tail swishing wild,
Every nerve wary, so alive
You take the whole world
Inside you, and it is well
Expressed with a playful
Joyous tear across an
Open field, then shiver
Of excitement traveling from
Your arched neck, then
Over a thick shoulder
Across the great slope
Of sturdy withers ending
At last in your hindquarters
Are you even beast at all?
Or four-legged mythological
Wonder of ages long past
Confirmation of that found
In your sturdy musculature
You gave us a leg up
Into history and beyond
Made us a mobile society
To gain new ground
Conquer and divide
Protect and declare
On your mighty back,
We were elevated
To at times a height
We didn't deserve, and
Sensitive to our whims,
(Most of the time, anyway)
Your trust was complete
You could have tossed us
All too easily into muck
A hoof to our head
You could've finish us
But you didn't, love
Now we've turned you
So out to pasture
Though in your prime,
I doubt you enjoy
The repose, so replaced
By a noisy, smoke spewing
Inelegant machine
Blow the stench, dear
Of that putrid sulfur
And carbon monoxide
From fair nostrils
Know that you are
Quite the superior
Those who don't know
How lovely you are
Are ignorant of more-
When we mount and join
Our intellect, your speed
You and I are unstoppable!
Oh, let's take to the hills!
Then much more, we'll relive
Days of yore when you did
Feel your noble import
We'll make the green grass
A bright dewy blur, take
Our own time and plod
Along paths too long untrod
Then both drink deep and
Cleansing drinks from the
Freshest cool stream
Then you may easy graze
While I so drowsy laze
While we enjoy so free
The finest of great company
