Real Angels

Siren song ends with flurry of light
While the last gasp is drawn
And the pain recedes
But they're already there,
They answered your call

Through your eyes shut tight
See them begin the fight
Pushing back the black curtain
Determined it won't close yet
No, they'll not let you go

But where is the wing beat
Where the halo illuminating
The famed perfect countenance
Heavenly musical accompaniment,
Alleluia, holy Seraphim?

No, only earthly reality
As on a stretcher you lay,
Blinking into sight an angel
"Can you hear me, hun?"
You'll not meet the maker

How oblivious you were
In that brief ride of heroics
Forcing breath and heart to rhythm
Parting traffic, stretcher waiting
A smooth transition made

"Giving you something for the pain
Just a little stick, hold still,"
IV started, blessed relief sends
You back to rest fully aware
Of real angels, in scrubs
