Flipping Cards

I sit too near a shuffled deck
They deal and flip, I make a bet

On 9 of clubs and 3 of hearts
I'm no good at the betting arts

So I do study every one
And flip them up till deck is done

I wonder and I scrutinize
Every card, so time it flies

There's nothing else to do but turn
Card after card, and money burn

I lose my shirt, my coat and hat
Pockets near empty, that is that

With what is left I stop and buy
My own deck, I wonder why

Before I walk through rainy sleet
To my dark home on Lonely Street

What attraction is evil game
No luck or love to save my name

The king he holds a mighty blade
He's crushed me each time I have played

The queen winks, but doesn't offer
Kiss of wealth to my poor coffer

The Jack he laughs and tells the ace
I'm nothing but a sad disgrace

So now I sit in my dark den
With cards and say never again

To give a hope in love or luck
Never get myself there stuck

In wanting what I'll never gain-
To stroll with you down Lucky Lane

Our game is lost, you better played
'Least I can call a spade a spade
