Jason: "I've Never Been High!"

Jason Castro

Maybe it was the dreadlocks or the heavy eyelids. Maybe it was the sentences that always seemed to tail off to nothing.

But right from the beginning of this season of American Idol, Jason Castro has been branded as a stoner.

Today, though, the singer told OK! that the reputation is way off the mark -- and that he has never been high in his life!

Jason, who was voted into fourth place last Tuesday, says that he's learned to deal with the stereotypes since he got his locks five years ago.

"I think that, especially with things like [Idol], people like to stereotype so easily," said the 20-year-old from Rockwall, Tx..

"Just because a guy is really easy going... People have always said that [about me].

"When I was younger I was real hyper and they'd think I was always drunk and I had never had a drink of alcohol until, like, last year.

"But the fact is I've never been high in my life!"

Jason didn't help to dispell the image last week by singing a Bob Marley song, then when asked to expain why he had chosen the song, he reasoned: "BOB MARLEY!"

He went on to forget the chorus to Mr Tambourine Man, then told reporters that he had once watched an entire season of American Idol but had forgotten until his brother reminded him.

Regardless, he said today, "I don't worry about what people say, and if they ask me I always tell the truth.

"But it doesn't matter what they say -- I just go about my business," he shrugged. Slowly.

What do you think?

Re: Jason: 'I've Never Been High!'

What does it matter anyway? He's still an exceptionally talented man with a seemingly big heart. Why do people make big deals of things that are NONE of their business. Good for him that he's never used drugs, but at the same time why is this even a question? There has been ONE photo of him supposedly blowing smoke. That could just as easily been a cigar or cigarette (hope not...lol, cus they're still bad for you) which he's legally able to do seeing as how he's a grown man. I am an avid reader of OK, especially since pics of Jason have been a feature since Idol started this season :) I will not, however, read a magazine that insults someone I think so highly of. I am glad you ASKED him before assuming the worst. But that last statement of how he shrugged "slowly" sounded like you were trying to call him a liar, which I do NOT like at all.

AMEN to your entire post, rjlvk. Jason has been nothing but wonderful, humble, sweet and kind to everyone and there is so much hate directed his way. He's a Christian and it shows in his behavior. He doesn't have to go around preaching...he's livin' the life. We need more people like Jason. His voice is amazing and touches my soul. I can't wait to get his album and see him live. Even upon seeing Jason's hairstyle the first time I saw him on AI, it never crossed my mind he was a pothead. I was raised to not judge people. BTW, Jason got 1350 on his SATs. I'd say he is most certainly NOT dumb.

Re: Jason: 'I've Never Been High!'

I have a bone to pick here and it's not with Jason, but rather the writer. For what it's worth, this is not news to me. Anybody who took ten seconds to look into Jason's background and strong faith would already know this about him. People see dreads and a laid back attitude and jump to conclusions. But that's not the point. The point is the writer is ridiculously condescending here trying to paint Jason as a complete idiot. Most everyone has forgotten their words at some point at this season, but they aren't branded a stoner. It's funny that the whole point of this article was supposed to be about breaking stereotypes, but the author does nothing but try to reinforce them. For what it's worth, Jason is also on scholarship to Texas A

It's funny that when a person like Jason Castro is laid back and easy going, people assume right away that he is on drugs. Although I can't blame people to think that way since this generation is full of people taking drugs, drink alcohol as there is no tomorrow and; smoke like chimneys, it's not necessarily true for everyone of us. Like Jason Castro, I am a Christian, a born again for that matter. I did not see the danger of those vices until I became a Bible reading individual. Not until we could grasp and absorb what God is telling us of things that we should avoid in life, we could accuse someone without validating if it's true or not of being under the influence of some type of a vice just by the way he has his hair done, or having heavy eyelids and so on and so forth.

I think if people know how to discern or perceive or recognize things of this world, you would know when a person is just putting you on. People need to go beyond the person they are criticizing. How about going about his character. And how about his heart? There's a saying that You Are What You Think. This phrase can have many meanings. In people who are easy to label Jason Castro as a stoner, they could either be a stoner themselves or encounter someone who is. It gives them a justification that if Jason Castro who is one of the favorites in American Idol, Season 7 is on drugs, then there is nothing wrong if they are taking them or planning to take them themselves.

They said when you assume, you make an ass of you and me. So whoever said those negative things about Jason Castro without valid facts, are considered stupid, a fool, idiot or imbecile according to the term assume. In their wrong assumptions, they showed their unrefine and filthy characters. It's always true that your mouth will spill your own corrupt and defile character. A person can pretend or put a mask or put a front, but no matter how they try it, it would still show, if you are able to discern it and know God's wisdom to discern what is vile in a person.

God said there's no one who is basically good. All of us have a sinful nature. Those who cannot admit to that truth in themselves are those that are very good in assuming things without proof. You have to have a desire to know God personally and know His true nature before you'd realize that assuming or criticizing someone without checking and correcting your own faults, mistakes and errors in your ways are subject to being judged by their Maker.

On Matthew 7, Jesus said:

“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others.[a] The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.[b]

3 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye[c] when you have a log in your own? 4 How can you think of saying to your friend,[d] ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
