Back Yard Beds - Fall 2001

Here is the back yard island bed that has been cut back for the winter.  You can just barely see the star magnolia tree to the right of the bird bath.  The shrub to the right of the oak tree in the picture on the left is a dogwood shrub. Next to it are 2 kerria shrubs. The ground cover to the right of those is called lamium. In the second photo to the right of that oak tree and along the picket fence is a lilac shrub, then a little princess spirea and the last is a holly shrub.
The first photo is a closer view of the star magnolia. It is extremely slow growing.  The second photo shows thelargest kerria shrub. Notice the green branches. There are several more smaller kerrias along this fence that I have cut from the first plant to start new ones.  You can also see the ground cover lamium "White Nancy."
In the first photo you can see the red branches of the dogwood shrub. It is surrounded by hosta plants that have been cut back for the winter.  You wouldn't think so looking at this picture, but the hostas completely cover the ground space beneath this shrub in the spring and summer. Once again, this is a closer view of lamium.
