| http://choosetocruise.com/ghostships.html Ghost Ships Nearly every town and seaside village has its tales of shipwrecks and ghost ships; those phantoms of the sea breaking through the fog and the mist on dark, stormy nights. Of course, most of those stories about ghost ships are just legends, but a few of them true. In some cases the sailors abondoned ship thinking it was about to sink in the storm - but it sailed on without them. In other cases the sailors died one-by-one of disease or starvation, leaving a perfectly good ship to sail for months... even years... on the high seas. Two of the most famous of those doomed ships are the Mary Celeste, and the Flying Dutchman. But there are others... ships caught in the Bermuda Triangle... the ships of the Bikini Atoll... the Mallows Bay fleet... and the mysterious reappearing ships of the Great Lakes. http://www.canada.com/halifax/dailynews/specials/backroads/story.html?id=2253A584-7416-438F-8773-D90519E76128 Harbourville: Ghost ships no tall fish tale By CHRIS KALLAN The Daily News Tuesday, July 30, 2002 CREDIT: CHRIS KALLAN Capt. Greg Hamilton's fishing boat, Vicky and Boys, sits dockside in Harbourville. ADVERTISEMENT Sightings of ghost ships abound in the tiny, close-knit community of Harbourville. Local lore maintains the presence of three-masted schooners who make port in Harbourville on the first new moon of every equinox. Translation: the time or date that the sun crosses the equator; making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth. Translation of translation: around March 21 and Sept. 22. Outsiders may scoff at ships mysteriously appearing from a sudden fog bank, but some of the locals insist this isnt just some tall fish tale. I saw one 30 years ago, but it didnt have the sails, said one woman. Added Capt. Greg Hamilton of Vicky & Boys: Ive seen things on the radar that never seem to be there and I cant really explain it, he smiled as he shrugged his shoulders. Thats as far as Ill go with that one. |
