| The Sharks Swim Club was started in 1982 by 6 physically disabled sportsmen training for the Disabled Olympics (now the Para-Olympics) in New York in 1984.One of them,Gordon Crowe, became a silver medallistswimmer, whileanother,Alper Ali,recieved a bronze in Weight Lifting. Since that time the club has existed to provide training to swimmers with a wide range of disabilities. Gorden crowe went on to represent great Britain at other events. He retired from swimming competitively but went on to gain his RLSS awards and A.S.A coaching/teaching awards to pass his skills on to both able bodied and disabled swimmers. The club trains on Monday evenings (although other swim sessions are being provided for squad swimmers)at Eltham College South East London and provides swimming sessions leading to A.S.A awards. Our swimmers frequently to represent our Bourough, area,or country and have gained at least 12 para-Olympic medals to date. There are also opportunities for swimmers to coach, teach andgain nationally recognised teaching awards. In November 1996,the Sharks were runners up in the Londoner of the Year Sports Category and recieved £1,000 to use for transport and kitting a team out for National Galas. We are also given donations by local organisations and try to raise our own funds too. The club is run by and for disabled people all on a voulentary basis.Because of the generosity of Eltham College with regard to the pool ,all tuition time is free. The aim of the club is to allow people with disabilities physically and mentally to have the same opportunities for competiton and coaching as thier able-bodied counter-parts. So if you know anyone or you yourself are disabled. E-Mail the club for more information on [email protected] |
