Sharks Downed By Waipu
The Dargaville ford Western Sharks were downed 26 - 10 by Waipu in an evenly contested Northland Wide Premier rugby match played at Caledonian Park, Waipu last Saturday.
The Sharks, with a changed line up due to a current spate of injuries, contested in all facets well, and pressed the home team hard, especially in the second half. They could easily have had ten more points, with what looked like a clear cut try to Solomone Palu alongside the post not awarded, and a long range penalty kick by Hayden Hutchinson bouncing back off the centre of the crossbar.
Palu was the outstanding forward on the pack with surging runs and crunching tackles and was well supported by his pack in which Matt Webster, Mark Russell and Sean McDonald were to the fore. Jamie Kay in at Halfback was tidy, Hayden Hutchinson a danger man in mid-field, and winger Stephen Tane showing marked improvement and is starting to use his pace well. Scott Wills at fullback had a useful outing too.
However a trait for conceding early match tries is becoming the sharks Achilles heel. Dashing Winger Tony Stokes dotted down for the Sharks with Hayden Hutchinson adding the conversion and a penalty. The Match was refereed well by David Owen.
The sharks take on Wellsford at R.D.1 Park, Dargaville this Friday night.
