Mid Northern 19 -  Sharks 18
A last minute penalty goal, his forth of the match, kicked by Mid Northerns Dana Young robbed the Dargaville Ford Western Sharks of a win they well deserved in a thrilling Northland wide Premier rugby match played at R.D.1 Park last Saturday.
The sharks , with their pack going great guns to gain and edge over the visitors for much of the game, enabled their team to post two tries to speedy winger Matt McCully, to the sole try by Mid Northerns Derek Carpenter.
When Sharks Centre Hayden Hutchison, who is hitting top form, slotted a 40 meter field goal to take the Sharks out to 18-16 with three minutes to go, it looked like the local team would pull off a major victory over the competition leaders, much to the delight of a large number of Sharks supporters. But a fumbled take of a kick off and an offside indiscretion, gave the visitors that penalty kick and the match.
However this was a grand effort by the Sharks with all the pack playing well, with perhaps number eight Ben Webster, who left the field with a badly dislocated shoulder and a very youthful lock Sean McDonald deserving special mention. Big loose forward SolomonePalu made a welcome return to the side also.
Halfback RocoBarbieri and first five Brendan Nathan had strong games and that the Sharks rearguard only let the high flying Mid northern backline in for one try speaks volumes for their defensive effort.
The sharks are away to HoraHora on Saturday and take on Kamo at home on ANZAC day the 25th of April.
