Awanui Suffer Sharks Attack
The men from the far north were given a 34-8 mauling by an aggressive Dargaville Ford Western sharks team in this Northland wide premier rugby match played at R.D.1 Rugby Park Dargaville last Saturday.
The sharks pack had Awanui under the hammer from the outset, with hooker Richard Anderson at his livewire best and big Props Craig Williamson & Noa Lutui having a strong outing. Lutui on the form he is showing must rate as one of the best Props in Northland. Fijian Max Tautau and Regan Walters are becoming a formidable locking duo, exhibiting a commendably high workrate, while experienced flanker Dave Pulman was all business as usual.
Young loose forwards, Brothers Ben & Matt Webster, both with good games, are starting to realize the potential they showed last season. With Matt?s ability in the lineouts an extra plus for his team.
The Sharks backs warmed to the task as the game progressed with Roco Barbieri a very busy halfback, fullback Mark Russell was sound and three quarters Hayden Hutchinson, Tony Stokes and Matt McCully featuring in some good interpassing and penetration. Hutchinson as Centre is regaining the form he is capable of and Stokes used his extreme pace well to score a brace of trys.
Coach David Hutchinson, and assistant Darryl Bradley can be pleased their efforts are bearing fruit and while there is a long hard season ahead, this was more then useful showing from their team.
The Sharks tries were scored by Roco Barbieri, Matt McCully and Tony Stokes with two, while McCully slotted three conversions and a penalty. Jeremy White scored a try & kicked a penalty for Awanui. The match was ably controlled by Boris Jurlina. The sharks are away to Marist next week.
