Sharks defeat HoraHora
The Dargaville Ford Western Sharks staged a strong second half resurgence to edge out HoraHora 31-12 in a willing 15th Round of the Northland wide Premier rugby competition played at R.D.1 Park last Saturday.
HoraHora started the match strongly, had their pack winning the lions share of possession, and their backline full of running, to post tries to Luke Voss and Steven Nisbett one converted by Cameron Lang, for a 12-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The sharks gradually gained some parity up front, but went in to the halftime break still 12-3 down, with only a Hayden Hutchinson penalty to show for their efforts.
In the second half the Sharks pack gradually would up, gained a slight ascendancy and put pressure on a tiring HoraHora side. They were rewarded with a good try to Hayden Hutchinson which he converted to close to 12-10, and after applying some good late game pressure, when they came close to scoring on several occasions, were awarded a penalty thirty five meters out, which Hutchinson slotted with a good kick to get their noses on front and close out a well merited victory.
For the home side props Patrick Forrest, Kelly Siolaa and his replacement Kevin Morrisey stood up well, while hooker Richard Anderson got through a ton of work as did locks for the day Patrick Bantha and Dave Pulman especially. Flankers Ben & Matt Webster were tireless, SolomonePalu at number eight had a powerful outing, and his was the telling effort for his side.
Halfback Cam Smith and first five Scott McDermott did well, Rocco Barbieri was his usually extra busy self and centre Hayden Hutchinson gave HoraHora plenty of horrors with his penetrating runs. Replacement winger Scott Wills was sound and the dashing Tony Stocks was unlucky not to score on two occasions late in the game. Fullback for the day Mark Russell proved his versatility, with a strong performance. Coach David Hutchinson and assistant Darryl Bradley are to be congratulated on the efforts they are getting out of in particular a host of young players.
The sharks travel to Kamo on Saturday.
