Waipu hang on against Sharks
The Dargaville Ford Western sharks traveled to Waipu last Saturday and suffered losses to both the Beaurepaires Premiers and the Morfett Autos reserve teams. However while the reserves a bit makeshift because of injuries were well beaten 46 -16 by the 2004 reserve grade champions, the Premiers were just pipped 29-22 and exerted great 2nd half pressure to have the home team just hang on for their victory.
Starting well the sharks went 8-0 up, then saw Waipu put on three tries, two of them 'gifted' intercepts (one from a blatantly off side position) from defensive blunders by the sharks backs, to take a handy 24-8 halftime lead. The sharks came back as stated, but left their strong run a wee but too late.
Front rower Craig Williamson was probably the best forward on the park and deserved his brace of tries, when he smashed through the Waipu pack on both occasions. Lock Aaron Lambly also showed out, scoring a try and shading Waipu captain and Northland lock Brad Taylor in the lineouts. Loose forward Regan Walters had a much better match than last week, making some punishing tackles, Solomone Palu also showed out with some surging runs and Andrew Simpson looked decidedly useful as well. Midfielder Brendan Nathan, had a good game, and winger Dave Fili with his fitness improving showed some of his characteristically strong runs.
