Sharks 17 Marist 14
The Dargaville Ford Western Sharks had their Beaurepaires side pull off a huge win when they rolled Marist, a team stacked with Northland squad members 17 ? 14, in premier club rugby, the match played at Kensington Park last Saturday.
When lock Mark Russell charged down an attempted clearing kick from Marist first five Josh Levi in front of his goal posts to get the try two minutes from full time, and ensure his teams victory, the large bench of sharks supporters present jumped in glee, and left the arena with smiles as wide as the Northern Wairoa river itself!.
Played in intermittent drizzle, but on a firm track, the Sharks, to a man, put in a mighty effort, their pack going great guns all match, and their young backline tackling their hearts out, to thoroughly deserve this victory. Hooker and Captain Craig Williamson led by example with a big game, along with Props Noa Lutui and a rapidly improving Hayden Lang ? Locks Peter Bond and Mark Russell, in conjunction with loosies, Pat Tou, Maake Onesi and especially Solomone Palu exhibited top eighty minute form.
The Sharks backs shut down Marist very successfully and all deserve plaudits, especially diminutive halfback Tepou Nipurahi in whom the Sharks have a very useful pivot. Try Scorers were Mark Russell and Craig Williamson with two, Tane Takulua slotted one conversion.
Carters players of the day were Mark Russell and Tane Takulua. Marius Botha officiated. .
The Morfett Autos reserve team, under Coach Laurie Davies have been having a good season this year, but in this Saturdays match were beaten by Marist 42 ? 10. Try scorers were Shaan Olsen and Hamish Stokes. Empire liquor centre players of the Day were Keven Morressy and Hamish Stokes. Murray Ruthe refereed.
The Sharks host Hora Hora on Saturday.
