Sharks vs Wellsford 19th July 2008
The Dargaville Ford Western Sharks took on Wellsford for their final games of the 2008 rugby season at R.D.1 Park last Saturday.
In the Premier encounter the 28 -  7 scoreline somewhat flattered the visitors, with the Beaurepaires Sharks side well in the game until the last five minutes, when Wellsford, with the advantage of a freshening wind and showers at their backs, scored two converted tries to seal their victory.
Down 14  -  7 well through the second spell, the Sharks looked to have put their flying winger over in the corner, after a slick backline move, but alas for the home side he was adjudged by the touch referee to have stepped on the line, by what looked like, to a good crowd of spectators, no more then a whisker at the most. A well performing Sharks pack in which Noa Lutui was a standout, immediately came back, baled the visitors up under their posts for several minutes, to again be desperatley unlucky to have one of their surges over the line judged held up.
However Wellsford proved they are made of stern stuff by re-grouping, getting down the Sharks end of the field, applying pressure, by scoring two convered trys to take themselves clear at the final whistle. Halfback Ryan Boyd scored the Sharks try with Mark Russell converteing.
The Morfett Autos reserve team gave competition front runners Wellsford a good run for their money before finally going down 21 - 14 in the early game. This team has played particually well, especially in the latter half of the season, finishing a clear fifth.
With a host of players making marked improvement and looking the best of good things for the Western Sharks in the coming seasons.
