Good Win For Sharks
The Dargaville Ford Western sharks rugby teams traveled to Whangarei Old boys last Saturday and had two good bonus point wins, their Beaurepaires premiers posting a 31-15 victory and the Morfett Autos reserve side coming out on top by 24-8.
In the premier match the Sharks started strongly with their forwards, soon gaining an edge, and had their young backline finding holes in the Old Boys defenses, with some good running plays.
Hooker Craig Williamson and big Prop Noa Lutui, anchored the pack well, with lock Peter Bond ruling supreme in the middle of the lineout and Mark Russell, who had his best game of the season, stealing a ton of Old Boys lineout throws at the front. Pat Tou was a lively flanker and Maake Onesi a strong performer at Number eight.
With go forward ball, first five Scott McDermott, who received an excellent service from Topau Nipurahi controlled play well with some astute kicking and passing, and mid fielders Tane Takulua and Sefa Maafi featured in some good running. Steve Tane, Steve Latavao, and Tony Stokes were in good form out wide. The only criticism that could be leveled at the Sharks is that with the game well and truly won, they did loosen up and take their foot off the pedal the last five minutes, letting old boys in for a couple of late match tries. Scorers for the Sharks were Craig Williamson 2, Maake Onesi, Tepau Napurahi and Thomas TePaa, with TaneTakulua kicking 3 conversions. Carters players of the day were Peter Bond and Tepou Nipurahi. David Owen was again an excellent Ref.
In the reserve match the Sharks were behind 8 -7 at halftime, with Old Boys using the advantage of wind and sun well throughout the first half. The Sharks however, applied increasing pressure the second half, took full control of proceedings to take out the game 24 ? 8. For the Sharks Noa Yelomatua and Lyle Burgess were good performers up front. While Richard Anderson had a solid outing at halfback and Cameron Smith played the conditions well at first five. Try Scorers were Hamish Stokes, Nigel Going, Thomas TePaa and Longosai Hufanga, with Smith adding two conversions. Empire Liquor centre player of the day was Jason Bradley. Brian Morgan refereed.
The Sharks Travel to Kensington stadium to play Marist this Saturday.
