Wellsford 31 Western sharks 24
The Dargaville Ford Western sharks traveled to Wellsford last Saturday for round 15 of Northland Wide Rugby, but came away with only a close loss bonus point to their Beaurepaires Premier team for their efforts, suffering a 31-24 loss.
The sharks were a bit slow out of the blocks, with Wellsford, who have a useful side this season, putting on a seven pointer in the first minute while the sharks looked to be still 'sitting on the bus'. The sharks woke up and a very even fast game ensued, with tit for tat scoring, but that early try proved to be the winning margin for the home team when the final whistle sounded. Flanker Blair Williamson played a blinder for the Sharks, with Mark Russell doing OK too, while halfback Haydn Andrews showed he is back to top form. Mid fielder Glen Jenyns was good value, his tackling excellent and Phil Langdon, at Fullback for this game, dangerous as ever with ball in hand. No 8 Andrew Simpson, Haydn Andrews and Phil Langdon scored for the Sharks, with Haydn Hutchinson kicking three conversions and a penalty. Tony Reader was a very able referee.
The Morfett Autos reserve sides winning streak came to an end at the hands of Wellsford in the early match, Wellsford who are one of the front runners in this competition, started strongly with two early try?s in quick succession, and come out deserved winners 37-23. However while being well behind at halftime, the Sharks put on a good 2nd half comeback, out scoring the locals in this spell. The front row of Vaughn Donald, Richard Anderson and Paddy Forest excelled up front, while Jason Chapman and Jonathon Webster were good value in the backs.
The Carters Under 18 side hosted Kaiatia collage and went down 29 -12 conceding try?s early in both halves, but managed two good try?s . Michael McDonald and Joseph Paniora played well for the home side.
The Under 18s travel to Keri Keri this Saturday.
