| Sharks open season at Wellsford | ||||||||||||||
| The Dargaville ford Western sharks kicked off the 2007 Northland wide club rugby season with an away game against Wellsford, resulting in their Premier side eventually going down 26-11 to the local team, in what proved to be a tight encounter. Down only 12-8 well in to the second half the Sharks were causing plenty of headaches for Wellsford, a side which brings up the majority of it's players from the 'big city' these days and have had early season predictions touting them as competition finalists. | ||||||||||||||
| However the home teams ability to sub seven fresh players perhaps swayed the final outcome, with Wellsford scoring two try?s in the last five minutes against a tiring sharks team and post the victory. | ||||||||||||||
| The Sharks pack played well to a man with live-wire hooker Richard Anderson, loosie Ben Webster and locks Regan Walters and big Fijian Max Tautau showing out, tidying up their lineout delivery is an area they need to improve. | ||||||||||||||
| In the backs threequaters Tony Stokes and Matt McCully showed their usual dash, while Scott McDermott was extra strong at second five. Argentinean Rocco Barberei at halfback players his rugby with the frenetic pace of a captive Puma just released on the Pampas and made an amazing tackle count on the defensive. Brendan Nathan was very sound at first five, just needing to act more as the link instead of trying to crash the ball up too often. | ||||||||||||||
| Regan Walters with a try and Matt McCully two penalty goals were the Sharks Scorers. The Sharks are at home to Awanui on Saturday. | ||||||||||||||
