Marist 29 -  Sharks 7
Friday night football at R.D.1 rugby park, saw a sizable crowd of spectators well entertained with two rousing well contested matches, when the Dargaville Ford Western sharks hosted Marist last week.
The Beaurepaires premier team, though missing a trio of key players through injury, gave a gutsy display, before being outlasted by a strong Marist lineup, who came away in the last quarter to post a 29-7 victory. It was 10-7 at halftime to the visitors, and anyones game. Second five Scott McDermott scored for the Sharks, after the home team had Marist under sustained pressure before halftime, the try converted by Jaimie Kay.
In the Sharks pack, flanker Solomone Palu, the sharks 'Tongan Tornado' was at his best, with powerful bursts on the attack and crunching tackle on the defense. He was well supported by No 8 Maake Onesi  who also had a strong game, as did front rowers Daniel Manuel and Craig Williamson. Lock Peter Bond again excelled in the lineout.
Halfback Ryan Boyd, first fives Brendan Nathan and replacement Henry Herman had useful outings for the sharks, fullback Jamie Kay had a good outing as well, but in the final  analysis, the injection of seven fresh replacements, including a leggy winger of blistering pace, carried the visitors to their victory. Carters players of the day were Solomone Palu & Sosifa Maafi.
The Morfett Autos Western sharks reserve team just went down to Marist 15-8 in an evenly contested curtain raiser. Siope Levaka was a standout player for the sharks scoring a try & kicking a penalty. Empire liquor Players of the day were Kevin Morrissy and Cameron Smith.
The Sharks travel to Hukerenui on Thursday night to take on competition high flyer's Mid Northern.
