| There?s an old rugby adage "win the scrums - win the game" and this was certainly the case when the Dargaville Ford Western Sharks travelled to Maungakaramea on Saturday in premier rugby. | ||||||||
| Played on a wet and increasingly slippery field the locals put the Beaurepaires Premier pack to the sword and scrummed their way to victory in a game the sharks would rather forget. | ||||||||
| The Sharks had their far share of territory, but just couldn't seem to put it together at critical times, suffering from handling errors and basic mistakes. For the Sharks loose forwards Solomone Palu and Maake Onese had storming games, both featuring in strong runs. While Tony Stokes came through a difficult encounter with merit at Fullback. Carters players of the day were Mark Russell and Hamish Stokes, Boris Jurlina refereed. | ||||||||

| The Morfett Autos reserve team took an early two try lead, and went on to win 15- 11 in the curtain raiser. But had to weather a storm as the local side came back strongly in the second half, with Referee Ross Bell whistling up a string of penalties against the sharks in the process. | ||||||||
| Cornerstone of the reserve play this season has been their lineout, anchored by high towers Jason Bradley and Hamish Chambers, who steal a significant percentage of opposition ball, this again went a long way to helping their team to victory on Saturday. In the backs Sosefa Maafi and Steve Latavao featured in some good running play despite the conditions. Try scorers for the sharks were Thomas TePaa (2) and Stephen Tane. Empire Liquor centre players of the day were Kevin Morrissey and Cameron Smith. | ||||||||
