Mid northern 23 - Sharks 17
The goal kicking ability of former Hurricanes first five David Holwell gave his front running Mid Northern side a slight edge when they pipped the Dargaville Ford Western Sharks 23 - 17 in a cliff hanger premier match played in the top conditions at Dargaville's R.D.1 Rugby Park last Saturday.
The Sharks Beaurepaires premiers put on another top performance, scoring three trys, the same as the visitors, but didn?t fare quite as well in the goal kicking stakes. The Sharks forwards, as they did against Marist the previous week, gave another grand effort in all phases of play, and exhibited a knack of gaining turnovers at vital times. They deserve much credit to a man.
The Sharks backs, from super lively halfback TePou Nipurahi, five eights Scott McDermott and Tane Takalua, centre Sosefa Maafi and Pacey wingers Steve Tane and Tony stokes, have all come in to their game markedly, while the return of the experienced Tama Herman at fullback, paid big dividends for his team.
Coach Daryl Bradley & Roger Rowse must be very pleased with the efforts of their changes the last few weeks. The sharks could have well taken the match late in the second half, when Nipurahi made a great break, latching on to a knocked back Mid Northern lineout take, putting a huge side-step to leave the visitors Full back Clint Going grasping at air and just getting cut down by a desperate cover defender inches from the line. Try scorers for the Sharks were Craig Williamson, Solomone Palu and Stephen Tane with Tane Takalua kicking a conversion. Carters players of the days were Noa Lutui and Tepou Nipurahi. All in all a good crowd of spectators were treated to an exciting game of club rugby.
The Morfett Autos reserve team went down to a very useful mid northern side 32 ? 15 in a very hard fought early game. Thomas TePaa, Kevin Morrissey, Edward Pumpi did well in the pack, with Siope Lavaka and Henry Herman good value in the backs. Steven Latavao & Hamish Stokes were the sharks try scorers, with Levaka kicking a Penalty and conversion for the Sharks points. Empire Liquor centre players of the day were Jason Bradley & Steve Latavao.
The sharks are away to Mid Western next week.
