Stone Temple Pilots reconvened earlier this year to finally make a fourth album. The results fall somewhat short of Core and Purple, their magnificent first two records, but they're probably an improvement on their third effort, Tiny Music Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop, which leaned too far in a pop direction for a lot of fans' liking.

The traumas of Weiland's drug problems have taken their toll, so No. 4 finds the quartet learning how to play and write and record with each other again. Weiland himself sounds tentative and held back on some cuts; either he's not sure of himself or his substance abuse has actually ravaged his vocal ability. Musically, some of the songs sound rushed or unfinished.

Having said all that, an STP album with a few rough spots is still way better than a lot of other rock records out there. Opener "Down" and "No Way Out" are classically heavy STP in the vein of Core's "Dead And Bloated," while "Sour Girl," "I Got You," and "Atlanta" are beautifully melancholy pop gems. If STP can keep it together to play live again and make another album, they could find themselves back on top and operating at full power.
