An important Pastoral letter from the Bishops of Scotland is displayed on the Notice Board in connection with a day of raising and almsgiving in a gesture of solidarity with all those who are suffering. Our Holy Father has suggested that we 'Live December 14th as a day of fasting, and fervently pray to God to give the world a stable peace'. The Old Testament teaches that "Prayer acquires strength when accompanied by fasting and almsgiving". In this spirit, you are urged to contribute to SCIAF's "Afghanistan Appeal"

UPDATE ON THE RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION OF THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS.

Running almost concurrently with the work on the fabric of the building (see below) has been the separate Project of the Restoration and Conservation of the Stations of the Cross, which was made possible by a Heritage Lottery Grant in February 1999.

Naturally because of the enormity of this Project, the progress of the work is a lengthy drawn out-process, but again as with the exterior of the building, the end sight is in yiew.

This coming Wednesday, another 3 Stations will be replaced in the Church with a further 2 to be returned to the Church in December of this year.

This leaves us with 4 to be restored in 2002. Throughout this Project the Heritage Lottery Fund have been insistent that we match their funding. This matching of the funding by the Parish has been achieved by fund- raising efforts, generous donations from within and outwith the Parish, and also by appeals to Societies, Trusts and private wealthier individuals.

Financially we are progressing well; nevertheless we still require, in order to cover our obligations in 2002 the sum of roughly 15 -20 K, not an impossible task, which we hope to achieve by continuing our efforts on the above lines, and are open to any suggestions for additional fund- raising.

One suggestion which has been put to us already and is bringing in funding on a regular basis - parishioners (whoever can afford it) donating 1 (or more) per week for a year. If you haven't yet done so and would like to participate please take a form from the foyer and return to the Parish Secretary .

We are confident that if we continue these efforts we are well on target for the completion of both the repair to the fabric of the building and also to the Stations of the Cross both of which are a major feature of the Sacred Heart Lauriston, a place of worship, prayer, reflection and quiet in the heart of the city .

Full details of the project on our Stations Page

REPORT ON REPAIR WORKS TO THE EXTERIOR OF THE SACRED HEART CHURCH.

You may recall that in November 1999, an extensive report (available here) on the external repair work to the Sacred Heart Church was issued.

In that report, a summary of the stage we had reached at that date was given namely; the first 2 Phases concerning the curing of dry rot occurring in the structural timbers had been completed in December 1996. Phase 3 was then commenced and this dealt with the exterior of the building - the north wall on the High Riggs being completed by the end of 1998.

At that time you may recall that due to Historic Scotland's own cash flow problems there was an interruption to the full programme of the external work i.e. the west wall (back of Church) the east wall (front facade) and the south wall of the building.

In the financial year 2000-2001 the grant for the already completed works became available and has been earning interest waiting for the time when work could recommence. Tenders were recently submitted for approval in accordance with Historic Scotland's requirements as a result of which A. Thorburn Ltd has been awarded the Contract for completion of these works starting at the end of September .

Financially we are well cushioned at present but will of course require you to maintain your generosity in the monthly Maintenance collections.

As always you will be kept updated with all progress in the weekly Newsletter. This is only to serve you with the good news that the end is now in sight for all the proposed works to the Church we love so well, and which have been going on since 1993 but now on target to be completed by 2002. The end is nigh. Thank you for your patience.

The money raised will go towards relieving health problems there. We are off to a flying start and you will see the financial progress by looking at the chart in the foyer. Updates also on our Youth page. Envelopes can also be collected from the foyer and returned with your weekly offerings with the proceeds of your personal fundraising. Please give details of how the money was raised if you wish. This is especially desired of the youngsters of our Parish. Week by week you will be advised of developments. Please do not place any envelopes in the brown box in front of the Pieta in the foyer. This box can be easily opened, and contents removed by some for whom the collection is not intended.

We pray for all those who are sick and for those who care for them. We pray especially this week for Brian Gray, Grace Watkins, Mary O'Rourke, Betty Smyth, Robert Shepherd and Matthew Brannan.

We welcome Niamh Collett McLauchlan, Thomas Magnus Canavan, Ciaran Christopher Reid, Marcus Thomas Fernandez, Ryan Anderson who were baptised since Easter and congratulate their parents.

We also congratulate Marriane Stritch and John Shepherd who were married in this Church last Sunday. May we wish a long and happy life together.

The Minutes of the recent Meeting for all Eucharistic Ministers are redy for collection from outside the Sacristy. There were one or two important decisions taken at this Meeting, and we give notice of these here:

(i) Because of the shortage of priests between the 30th June and 4th July, there will be a number of Communion Services rather than the Celebration of Mass.
(ii) the Offertory Procession is being introduced at all Sunday Masses with effect from next Sunday. Your active co-operation in this would be most welcome.

Parish Review: Apologies
One of the oldest groups in this parish was omitted from the Easter Parish Review - the UCM. One of the most recent of groups was also omitted - the Justice and Peace Group. The omissions should not be seen as any reflection on the work of those groups both of which deserve recognition for the work they do. The omissions are down to my failure (as author) to check the Review adequately before it was printed.

TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED No 3

Amy and Peter's Tale

Amy and Peter were like many other young families- they both worked, they had bought their own home, their two preschool children were well and happy. They considered themselves to be a normal family with a bright future.

Their slide into unpayable debt happened so quickly and easily that the situation was beyond control before they realised. The car needed more repairs than they had planned for. Friends kept inviting them out for meals -they were too embarrassed to say they couldn't afford to go. The house needed essential repairs. They were paying off loans from before they had bought the house. They took out more loans. Then they took out loans to consolidate the loans.

Soon, they couldn't afford to pay the mortgage and they let other repayments slip. They ate at the local food run for homeless people, trying to hide their true situation from family and friends. A court summons arrived saying that their home was to be repossessed, then they received a bailiff's warrant. One day they returned home to find that the locks had been changed -the only thing left to do was to admit their situation and move in with Amy's sister.

A CHAS (Catholic Housing Aid Society) adviser helped them to sort out their debts and negotiate manageable payments. Five months later they were able to return to their home.

DID YOU KNOW

  • In 1999, 30,030 households lost their home because of mortgage arrears. Many of these included children and older people.
  • The potential for more owner-occupiers becoming homeless is huge. Currently, over 29,500 households are more than 12 months in arrears with their mortgage payments and over 96,000 households are up to 6 months in arrears.
  • In 1999, 104,770 households (356,000 people) were accepted as homeless. However, 242,460 households applied. This means that 464,000 who applied are now living on the streets, in hostels or are 'hidden' away on friends sofas and floors.
TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED NO 2

Derek's Tale

Derek's birth was difficult and his mother died shortly afterwards. Derek was put straight into care. All of his life, Derek has been haunted by the thought that he was responsible for his mother's death. Derek left care in his teens to do National Service He stayed in the army until he was in his mid-twenties.

With nowhere to go, Derek found himself on the street and he started drinking. Drinking led to brawling, brawling led to prison. After several short sentences, Derek was confined in a secure unit for the criminally insane before being discharged into long term hospital care. After changes to mental health legislation, Derek was able to discharge himself. He moved into a hostel which had over 250 residents in cubicle accommodation but no support. Derek again turned to drink and had several more spells in prison.

When his hostel was closed down, Derek was fortunate enough to get a place in Aberdeen Lodge. Eventually, he responded to the consistency of care and support shown by the staff. They helped him understand his feelings of guilt and rejection and, most importantly, investigated the cause of his mother's death -she had died of diphtheria. Derek, now 70, is finally beginning to experience something of home.

Do You Know

  • Many people who currently sleep rough, or have done so in the past, have lived in institutions, the army, hospital, children's homes or prison.
  • Recent figures state that 13% or prisoners are homeless when they are sentenced and 34% are homeless on their release. It is estimated that up to a hair or rough sleepers have been homeless.
  • 20% of homeless people were in the forces.
  • Changes to Mental Health legislation and the introduction of Care in the Community have lead to many vulnerable people being poorly housed or sleeping rough without adequate support.
  • 1 in 10 young people have been in care. However,l in 3 or the homeless have been in care.

TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED NO 1

Lauren is the eldest of 8. The birth of the youngest child, when Lauren was 14, put the family under a great deal of stress. With Lauren expected to do most of the child care at the expense of her studies, relationships with her parents deteriorated and finally broke down. Lauren left home at 16 and moved into the only accommodation she could afford -a damp, poorly- furnished room in a house with 8 others, including a very busy drug dealer.

With basic level Housing Benefit (all that is available to under 25s), Lauren fell behind with her rent and was threatened with eviction. If she worked, she lost her benefit. As the only jobs that Lauren could get were poorly paid, she felt trapped. After struggling for 6 months, Lauren found out about FOYERS. They take in young people and provide accommodation and ,training. Now, at 17, Lauren's relationship with her parents is improving, she has been accepted into a hairdressing course and is well on her way to a happy and successful independence.

DID YOU KNOW

  • Young people like Lauren can only get Housing Benefit that covers the most basic accommodation. They are limited to shared houses, often with people they don't know, and often end up behind with their rent and threatened with eviction.
  • FOYERS offer independent accommodation to young people which is tied to work and training. They target those leaving care or who are homeless aged 16-24.
  • Under current definitions, young homeless people aged 16 or 17 are not classed as a priority for housing and are given few, If any, benefits. However, the Welsh Assembly has recently included this age group for priority housing.
  • There are an estimated 250,000 homeless people under 25

God of the unexpected
God of surprises
Tales of your works are marvellous indeed
In the belly of a whale
In the parting of a sea
In the feeding of thousands
You see our need and awaken in us an unlooked for hope
Continue to surprise us, Lord,
Open our eyes to the unexpected.

Christmas Meditation from Fr Peter Randall

Last Christmas I quoted the following questions from Jesuit sources:

  • What have I done for Christ?
  • What am I doing for Christ?
  • What will I do for Christ?

As I look back on last Christmas's newsletter, I see how much has been done by many people over the past year. For me the challenge is to keep connected to all the different people involved. We see in the writings of St Paul, attempts to keep in contact with the various fledgling Christian communities, urging them to keep going in their new found faith. In those letters, he also addressed some of the complex issues which these new communities were facing.

In this parish, there are "fledgling" initiatives and new people. They fly alongside those activities and those people who have been a part of this parish for short and longer periods.

The image that comes to me amidst all of this is that of wold geese. The wild goose was adopted by Celtic Christianity as a symbol of the soul or Spirit. Those who know about these things have given me the following explanation.

Firstly, for ancient peoples, the wild geese were seen flying or feeding, but nobody knew where they came from or where they were going. This Parish has a strong sense of where it has come from, but we can only glimpse where we are going through a shared imagination. We have to entrust this to the work of God's Spirit working in each of us, but also at the levels of parish, diocese, and the Universal Church. It may be unnerving, but remember it is winged Messengers that steady trembling hearts in more than one scene from God's Word to us in scripture.

Secondly, if one of the wild geese should fall to the ground, two others accompany it. We are meant to be a reconciling community. There are many stories these days about how the Church does not come to the assistance of those who have fallen. We all succeed and fail in different ways. But we are bound to keep going beyond our own individual successes and failures.

Thirdly, the geese fly in formation. They need to communicate with each other in goose language. They rotate (not in the air) in position, spending perdiods of time at the centre, the middle or the periphery. Authority shifts among them. Well, perhaps the Church isn't quite like the geese in this respect, but two out of three isn't bad.

What the Church needs at all levels is to continually work on these issues of communication, reconciliation and formation. We need to ask ourselves what we have learnt and what we still need to learn. We use the language of the Incarnation to describe ourselves: The Body of Christ. We use the Old Testament language of belonging and journey to to say who we are: People of God. At any one time we are being born, dying and rising, as the Body of Christ and the People of God. That is what we are doing for Christ, in Christ and through Christ.

I wish you all joy and peace this Christmas, and in the New Year.
