Arrivals and departures in the Jesuit Community.
2 September 2000
Fr Dave Stewart has left us to do a few months of study in the USA, followed by the final part of Jesuit training, known as Tertianship, which he will do in Australia. This means he will do the full Spiritual Exercises over 30 days, and engage in different kinds of pastoral work. The aim of this period is to deepen and confirm his own vocation.
Fr Stewart gave himself generously to a number of different works within the Parish. He also worked outside of the Parish, for example in the Lauriston Centre, St Thomas' School, and in other parishes. Let's remember him in our prayers, as he starts this final part of his training as a Jesuit.
Fr Chris Boles will join the Jesuit community:.here in early October. Although he will be doing mainly parish work for the first three months, his mission from the Provincial is to work in what Jesuits call the Social Apostolate, looking to the areas of need in and beyond the parish and the Catholic community. This apostolate is vast in its scope, and given his years of work with the Jesuit Refugee Service, he is well prepared for this outreach activity.
In December, Fr Paul Fletcher will also join the Jesuit community. His mission,is primarily to assist in the parish, but he will also give some of his time to the area of spirituality. He has spent some years working in Craighead and Loyola Hall retreat houses, and being deaf himself, he has ongoing work with the deaf community. His first language is sign language, but his skills in lip-reading mean that he can converse easily with those who do not use sign language.
Finally, a third arrival! Fr Gero McLoughlin will arrive soon to help co-ordinate Jesuit activity in spirituality, at a broad level in the Province. He has considerable experience in such work, including a few years at Craighead. Some of his work will focus on the local development of the spirituality network.
The presence of this number of Jesuits in a community, engaged in this diversity of work, is not something that the Provincial can afford to do on a general basis. So what we are seeing is unusual, given the contemporary shortage of priests. What is happening in this Jesuit community is a pilot scheme, or an "experiment". St Ignatius used the idea of "experiments" as a way of giving the Lord a chance to speak to us through our doing something different.
The idea here is for Jesuits with different skills, working in different areas, to share their reflections, and collaborate with each other. It is hoped that this will also generate fresh ideas and greater scope for the overall collaboration that is needed in the Church.
It's an exciting time for the Parish, because although the Jesuits here are not meant to be focussed solely on the parish, their presence and whatever work they offer, enriches the parish. They too, will be nourished and encouraged by your faith, your work, and your prayers.
Visit of the Jesuit Provincial Father David Smolira visited Edinburgh over the weekend 17/18th June 2000 as part of his ongoing duties as Provincial of the British Jesuit Province which covers England, Scotland, Wales, Guyana and South Africa. In the context of the Sacred Heart Parish he met with the newly formed Parish Pastoral Council, celebrated the 1115 Sunday Mass (see below also) and met parishioners for a cup of tea at the usual after-Mass get togther. A report of his discussion with the Parish Pastoral Council appears on the PPC Webpage. |

Lord Jesus Christ we worship you living among us in the sacrament of your body and blood. May we offer to our Father in heaven a solemn pledge of undivided love.
