Ghent's medieval treasures are an integral part of a dynamic urban center where the Middle Ages blend right into the 20th Century. Ghent is the second largest port in Belgium, today. This Flemish city began as an abbey founded by St. Bavon, about 630 AD. A castle was built in the 9th Century. The rivers Leie and Lieve allowed the town to become a growing textile industry by the 13th Century. The Spaniards came to power in the 16th Century. After the Industrial Revolution, the cotton-spinning machinery helped to revive this industrial city. Ghent has a true connection with American history, for it is here that the treaty ending the War of 1812 was negotiated and signed.
