Attn: Patch Program Coordinator
Unit 21420
APO AE 09705
This patch, originally designed by Soesterberg Neighborhood Girl Scouts, introduces you to some of the many attractions in Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands. We have tried to make the requirements flexible enough for the various age groups and interests of those of you who would like to explore this city. You should be able to earn the patch in one day, but there is so much to see in Amsterdam you may like to spend a few days here. Be sure to wear your walking shoes and bring rain gear.
To earn the patch, you must complete the following requirements:
Read the enclosed article on Amsterdam and the Netherlands.
Study the list of Dutch words and be able to recognize them.
In Amsterdam, you are required to visit at least 4 places of interest: a museum, a church/cathedral, and at least two from the list of sights provided, or of your own choice.
Ride on one form of mass transit, (i.e. train, bus, tram, metro, canal boat)
Try one typical Dutch food (i.e. cheese, erwtensoep (thick pea soup in season) haring, pannekoeken (plate size pancakes with meats, vegetables, or fruit) pfooertjes, kroquets, oliebollen, speculaas cookies, bakery treats...)
Write a paragraph on what you have learned, places you went, highlights of your visit, and what you like best (younger Brownies may draw a picture or dictate a story for someone else to write).

***MONUMENTS***
BEGUNHOF (1346) entry from the Spui, tram 1,2,4,5,9,16,24,25. 14th Century square withmemories of the pilgrim fathers. In the middle of the square you will see the medieval English church and opposite it a clandestine Roman Catholic Church. #34 is the oldest house in Amsteredam. The gable is wooden an dates from 1475.
ROYAL PALACE (1648-1662) Dam Square. Open in the summer, Mon-Sun- 1230-1600 tram 1,2,4,5,9,13,16,17,24,25 bus 21,67. Originally just a town hall, it is a splendid monument to monied vanity, for in that time, the rich made the laws. It is of Baroque architectures and a symbol of affluence and bourgeois self esteem. This is the 8th wonder of the world, being built in 13,659 piles.
DAM MONUMENT 1956. Tram 4,9,16,24,25. Memorial to the victims of WWH. Completed in 1949. A remarkable development has taken place around this monument, for it has risen above it's original purpose as a tragic reminder to become a symbol of a new kind of personal and individual freedom, particularly for the young. This monument has become an international meeting point, a free open center of personal freedom. That is how the modem Dutch experience it; having known real oppression, they keenly appreciated the freedom they now enjoy. Partly for this reason, they feel a sense of responsibility for what is happening in other parts of the world.
The Dutch are very much involved in developing 3rd world countries and readily supporting humanitarian causes everywhere.
SCHREIERSTOREN (TOWER OF TEARS) 1569. Prins Hendrikkade corner Gelderskade.
Part of an old city wall where sailor's wives used to go to wave good bye to their husbands as they sailed for parts unknown.
***TRANSPORTATION***
As with most European Countries the transportation system in the Netherlands is quite extensive and readily available. If taking the train you will want to purchase tickets to Amsterdam Central Station. It is a monument in itself. It stands on 3 artificial islands and 8,687 wooden piles.
In Amsterdam there are 3 basic types of transportation: 1. Metro 2. Bus 3. Tram
As you come out of the Central Station there are 2 places you can purchase tickets for public transportation. The VVV (Tourism Bureau), and Metro Office. These buildings are across from the train station as you go out the front. If you choose to take the canal ride, tickets can be purchased at the VVV.
If you use public transportation, consider a day pass, good for 24 hours; costs approx 8.75 GUILDERS.
Most Dutch understand some English and are happy to help you.
