Passenger Information
Both of these carriages were originally built as Horse Boxes in the
1930's by the New Zealand Railways. There were 3 compartments, two for
horses and one for the attendant. The attendants compartment was in the
middle of the wagon. They were fitted with steam heating, but were known
to be rather cool, as the doors didn't seal very well. These
carriages were fitted with old passenger bogies enabling a smoother ride,
but this meant that the couldn't take as much weight, as the un modified
wagons.
During the 1970's Shantytown acquired these two wagons from the NZR. One had been fitted out as a mobile workman's hut, this today is up beyond our photo stop. These are the only passenger stock that Shantytown has. The are able to take 30 people per vehicle, with a total of 60 passengers between the two carriages on one trip. As a note it is roughly 15 to 20 people equal one tonne, so when operating the locomotive is pushing 23 - 24 tonnes up the 1:33 section of the line. |
