PWD 508 was originally numbered 208 under the New Zealand
Railways numbering system. It was acquired by the Public Work’s
Department who renumbered it 508. In this guise PWD 508 was used
to build railways through out NZ, and was the only L not to work on
the NIMT. Although PWD 508 was the only L to work in the South Island under
PWD ownership, and was used in construction of part of the SIMT between
Blenheim and Waipara.
It was acquired by Wilsons Portland Cement and worked there until 1974. When it was donated to the Tauranga Historic Village, where it was restored to working order by retired railway workers based in Tauranga. The restoration was under taken in the Tauranga Loco Depot. With the demise of the Tauranga Historic Village all the railway equipment was sold off. Shantytown acquired the L in 1998. Since then PWD 508 has been slowly restored. When decommissioned the locomotive will be named Gertie. This locomotive has worn the following identifications: 1206 - Builders number 208 - NZR Road number 508 - Public Works number 7 - Wilson's Portland Cement number 508 - Tauranga Historic Village (PWD Number) Gertie - Shantytown. |
