The locomotive was built to a design supplied by the, NZR's Chief Mechanical Engineer of Otago. The locomotive was of an improved "F" Class design, with side tanks instesd of saddle tanks. The Sharp, Stewart didn't enter service until around 1898. It worked at Kaitangata all its life, until 1971 when the minister of Mines donated her to Shantytown. The New Zealand Railways transported the loco to Shantytown. Her job was to shunt the coal wagons form the township of Kaitangata to the NZR interchange at Stirling, during this time she suffered a major accident. One day in 1949 upon arrival at Stirling the station agent inadvertently forgot about the train from Kaitangata. Some how some wagons got away, as the Stirling yard is down grade, and rammed into the rear of "Kait". After this the NZR fitted airbrakes to "Kait". Her cab was pushed in, and still to this day indentations remain, as a reminder to the day the wagons bet "Kait". On a happier note one day during her working life it is rumoured that "Kait" hauled the South Island Limited express, from Benhar to Balclutha, only a short distance. This happened to be as "Kait" was the only loco available to the NZR. An A or Ab was taken off a freight at Balclutha and continued with the Limited to Invercargill.
