the trek: through our guesthouse in chiang mai, did a 3 day trek into the mountains of northern thailand with 7 other travellers.  we did all the touristy things (elephant riding and bamboo rafting) along with a bit of exercise, and an intimate look at two hill tribe villages.  definitely one of the best things we did in thailand.
the 1st day's hike was short, only 6km, but it seemed longer, due to the charred landscape (from tribe slashing and burning) and the resulting smoke.
our first stop: a lahu village, about 12 km from the burma border.
our lahu '5 star hotel'.  (as described by coconut- the world's coolest trek guide.  he knew everything about everything.)  what you can't see, are the ubiquitous tribe roosters, who like to start crowing at 2:30am.
day 2: hiking through the bamboo forests.
right: some yaks kindly pause to pose for the camera.
bamboo rafting!
our crew: mo and i, a couple from san fran, and our guide coconut.  morgan was a champ, 'rowing' almost the whole way.
day 3: elephant riding!
far left: mo, andrew and i set off from the 2nd village on the biggest (and apparently digestivly challenged) elephant.  ask mo about the sensation of elephant muscles moving under your behind.  left:  heath, ken and kim follow our lead.
caving and home:  after the elephants, we spelunked through an enormous cave (right), then had a 3 hour drive back to chiang mai through the jungle, in the back of a 4X4 truck- the only way you can drive on the 'roads' there.  really, a phenomenal time.
