| the trek: | through our guesthouse in chiang mai, did a 3 day trek into the mountains of northern thailand with 7 other travellers. we did all the touristy things (elephant riding and bamboo rafting) along with a bit of exercise, and an intimate look at two hill tribe villages. definitely one of the best things we did in thailand. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| the 1st day's hike was short, only 6km, but it seemed longer, due to the charred landscape (from tribe slashing and burning) and the resulting smoke. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| our first stop: a lahu village, about 12 km from the burma border. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| our lahu '5 star hotel'. (as described by coconut- the world's coolest trek guide. he knew everything about everything.) what you can't see, are the ubiquitous tribe roosters, who like to start crowing at 2:30am. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| day 2: hiking through the bamboo forests. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| right: some yaks kindly pause to pose for the camera. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| bamboo rafting! our crew: mo and i, a couple from san fran, and our guide coconut. morgan was a champ, 'rowing' almost the whole way. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| day 3: elephant riding! far left: mo, andrew and i set off from the 2nd village on the biggest (and apparently digestivly challenged) elephant. ask mo about the sensation of elephant muscles moving under your behind. left: heath, ken and kim follow our lead. |

| caving and home: after the elephants, we spelunked through an enormous cave (right), then had a 3 hour drive back to chiang mai through the jungle, in the back of a 4X4 truck- the only way you can drive on the 'roads' there. really, a phenomenal time. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
