singapore
after melaka, we figured we were so close to singapore, we might as well go down and have a look.  as promised, it was CLEAN and green, and in general, a very pleasant place to visit.  it was not nearly as expensive as everyone had made it out to be, but then again, we live in japan, so our concept of expensive is a bit skewed.  food was good (amazing chinese) and still very cheap for a big city.  we happened to be there for singapore's national day, which meant all sorts of goodies for us- free admission to the national museum, a full military show, and large cultural fair.   very good timing on our parts.  we just stayed a few days (we were eager to get to the beach) but enjoyed it thouroughly.
me in front of a chinese temple.  the one we really wanted to visit was closed for renovations...  one of the weirdest things about singapore is how downtown, instead of having separate districts, they have these enormous skyscrapers next to little temples like this one.
this is the oldest hindi temple in singapore.  all the carvings are amazingly ornate and detailed.  really cool.
the night safari was a definite must-see.  despite some really annoying and stupid families ("daddy daddy, why isn't mr. owl looking at us") it was incredible to see the animals at night.  when we lost the crowds, it felt like we'd broken into the zoo and were all alone with the animals.  very cool.  the highlight was the bat room, when you can walk through a bat enclosure with free flying bats.  spectacular.
me, in front of the giant haw par villa dragon.  this very strange place featured big displays of different chinese legends.  go through the dragon's mouth, and you get to see the 10 layers of chinese hell, complete with screaming in the background and loads of blood and guts.
again at haw par villa, getting cozy with the laughing buddha...
the singapore national museum. and yes, we did actually go inside, not just take this picture.  see parents- we did get some culture. =)
