| september 18, 1999 across the river from me is a village called matsukawa, where david lives. the town is backed right up against the northern japan alps, and there are some great hiking trails around there. one kind of chilly september day, david took a group of us up into the mountains to show us a waterfall he and craig had found a few weeks before. |

| here's our happy hiking bunch right at the start of the trail (notice the ladder made of logs.) l-r standing: andrew, david, clare, fauzia, and ayako. sitting: thomas. | |||||||||||||||||||
| the trail itself isn't that demanding, but the presence of lots of little bridges like this one over the river makes it a bit exciting at times, especially when the bridges have been washed away by storms, and you have to kind of frog jump from rock to rock to get across. ayako did well with this one though. =) | |||||||||||||||||||
| our destination: by this time, the air was too cold to go swimming in the freezing mountain water, but the waterfall was as beautiful as david had promised. the water was crystal clear, and an almost unreal shade of blue. definitely a good afternoon's work. that's the best thing about living in ikeda- i'm close enough to matsumoto to get to the city when i need to, but only a 5 minute drive, and a 2 hour hike from places like this. | |||||||||||||||||||
