hong kong
may 9-14, 2001
thanks to some frequent flier miles tickets, i was able to go to hong kong for 5 days in may.  hong kong is a tiny place, constantly bustling with activity.  for me, the best parts about it were the tiny, contained 'old neighborhoods' where temples still stand next to new banks, and you can follow the smell of shark fins and birdnests into streetside shops.  the most overwhelming thing about this 'special administrative region' is definitely the prevalence of money.  money is everywhere.  there are more banks than i've ever seen in such a small area.  everyone is making money, and spending in on brand new BMWs that they drive to the armani exchange shop.  all told, it's almost more foreign than some of the less developed countries i've been to.
the view from the tsim tsha tsui promenade.  looking at this picture, it really doesn't capture just how crowded the island is with buildings.
HK sign madness
we happened to be there on world falun gong day.  though there were police men watching, the group is still allowed to practice in hong kong.
the world famous 'jumbo' floating restaurant. in aberdeen harbour.
fishing boats and house boats anchored in aberdeen harbour.  the contrast between these beat up vessles and the ocean of modern high rises around them cannot be stressed enough.
