Hi! I'm here to answer all your questions about those oddball books you can't find. Looking for a title, but not sure if it exists? Wanting to know who the real author is on a book you're pretty sure was written under a nom de plume? Where the heck is that Stephen King story your favorite movie is based on? Ask away!
Today's question:
Hey, I wanna raise Satan!
Well, first, you're a goofhead. If I knew how to call up Satan, would I tell anyone? No, I'd have the Prince of Lies bringing me coffee and doughnuts all day and making fun of his horns.
Seriously, no, the book doesn't exist. Most books that are said to be ancient and evil generally aren't, like the
Necronomicon. Though the movie Ninth Gate involves this 'mystical'  tome and shows it several times in the film, the only place it was ever printed was in a studio's prop department.
The movie, however, is based on a real book. It is called The Club Dumas, by Arturo Prez-Reverte. (Sonia Soto has tranlated it for those of us who don't speak Spanish.) You can still order that at a retail bookstore. Of course, the Ninth Gate is out on DVD and all that, too.
I saw the Ninth Gate, and I was wondering if there really is such a book called the Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows? And does it work?
