Musing over Shang Tsung
This is another serious thought of mine about Shang Tsung
Ok, so today someone tells me how much they hate Mortal Kombat and especially Shang Tsung.
When I asked why they hated him, I expected something superficial like �He killed Lui Kang!� or something among those lines.
I did not expect the answer to be �Because he�s the image of a stereotypical Chinese man!�
I didn�t think that it was intended to be that way.
But then, I can�t really answer that.
Was he created in that image just to fill in a bunch of stereotypes?
I do not think so.
I can speak from personal agendas and such.
I am Japanese. I am obsessed with Japanese things, the language, art, clothes; oh the clothes�
I would wear a kimono if I had one�..ah such a beautiful outfit. I would even wear the men�s ronin outfit too, I don�t care.
I like Chinese arts, clothes and hairstyles too. There are many times I will see a Chinese pattern shirt in a store with the pattern and I will buy it.
I love this store called �Choice Plus� in the mall. Even though a lot of the skirts are not my size because I am much smaller than them, I don�t care. The skirt can meet the sewing machine of mine for all I care, I love the clothes there because they look very Asian.
I want to learn Japanese and I collect Asian Good Luck Cats.
In my room I have Chinese character wood plaques on my walls.
SO when I see Shang Tsung, I don�t look at him as �stereotype� on Mortal Kombat.
I see someone with same fervor as I have, someone who has a great affinity for Chinese Arts like I myself have.
So I guess this kind of concludes it. This isn�t a big document like the last few ones were�.=)
