I have found several sources reporting the origin of the Wagner/ Waggoner surname. The website "Surnames: What's in a Name?" states that the Wagner/Waggoner surname is an English/German occupation name. Meaning "....one who drove high sided carts or wagons carrying produce between manors is Waggoner in England, and the German counterpart is Wagner." Wagner is also denoted as "wagon maker." On the Family Chronicle site they state "Wagner (British/German). From Waganari (Germanic), wagonmaker, wagon driver." My specific line is Germanic, and has been traced back to Jacob Wagner(abt.1676-1745) of Switzerland. His grandson Hans Jacob immigrated to U.S. in 1740, and reportedly a school teacher changed his last name to Waggoner. The following site, German Names in America ,is very informative regarding the origin of surnames in Germany. The graphic on the left is the Wagner "Coat of Arms."
