Lesson Presentation @
McNeil High School
My canine blood drawing lesson for the most part went smoothly however there were areas I could have improved on. One of the reasons I chose this lesson was because it is a subject I am very knowledgeable in therefore, I was able to deliver the lesson with confidence. My class was very interested in the subject matter that I chose to teach. I could tell they were interested by the continuous questions they were asking and their willingness to volunteer when needed. All my students were able to perform a canine blood draw on a mannequin. This kept my students actively involved in the lesson while I was able to assess mastery. This lesson also made it easy for me to make modification to include the SPED students. I was able to give them the extra time needed for them to be successful.
One of the skills that I surprisingly found most challenging was classroom management. My class consisted of 22 students, including 2 inclusion students. After some of the students performed their blood draw on the mannequin, they were off task talking. The discussion that the students were having was not related to the lesson like instructed. This interrupted the students that were performing their blood draw. I asked the students multiple times to be on task and they ignored my request. At the time I felt that I could not be any stricter than I was because it was not my classroom and I was just a guest. Looking back I realize that because I didn’t make the students comply, I could have affected other students learning.
Next time I will make my students respects the rules of the classroom and others by giving them a choice. They can follow the classroom rules or simply not participate and receive a deserving grade. Whether it is my classroom or I am a guest instructor, the students should always comply with they rules.
This experience was very educational to me. It provided me with a sense of confidence that will help me succeed as a teacher. This confidence will also help me with my nerves in my next teaching experience. It also provided me with constructive criticism so that next time I am in the classroom; I will know what I need to improve on. This experience also gave me insight to what a real teaching environment and lesson consist of.
