Prodigal son Walsh has team on top

31 Jul 2005 - The return of Shamrocks prodigal son Matt Walsh from Ireland has the western suburbs team atop the Queensland Gaelic Football League after its fourth consecutive win at Willawong over the weekend.

Walsh kicked two goals to lead all scorers as the Shamrocks A team 6-10 (28) beat Harps 1-7 (10) on Sunday, to remain top of the ladder.

Walsh recently returned from football in County Meath, and religiously found top form with 2-4 in his two matches for Shamrocks A.

Team mate Justin Rees scored 1-2 against Harps on the weekend, to also be in a scoring groove with 3-7 in the last three weeks.

Shamrocks A next face a stern test against fourth-placed Souths on Sunday.

In the ladies division, Shamrocks 4-4 (15) lost to Sarsfields 4-5 (16) despite Australasian best and fairest player Tricia Browne showing total determination to score a career-best 4-1.

Shamrocks remain in second place ahead of Sarsfields, despite suffering its second loss in three weeks.

Daly deals up more points

24 Jul 2005 - Irishman Paul Daly led another points blitzkrieg as Shamrocks may go top in the Queensland Gaelic Football League with a convincing win at Willawong on the weekend.

Daly continues to lead the Shamrocks scoring, this time kicking 1-4 as Shamrocks 3-19 (28) beat Easts Celts 0-5 (5), giving Brisbanes south-west suburbs team its third consecutive win.

The Shamrocks A team may go top of the mens ladder, with league favorites John Mitchels being outscored by Souths on Sunday. Shamrocks B beat Sarsfields for a chance to move ahead of Easts and into fourth place.

Dalys scoring rush comes as his team scores points like never before, with its top three all-time highest points tallies coming this season. Sundays 19 points was the second highest in team history.

Best for the Shamrocks A team included Andrew Meiklejohn, Anthony Fowler, and Daly, with Shane Gormley and two-time Australasian minors best and fairest winner Cameron Carney also strong across the ground.

Aiden Fikar scored his second goal in only his second game of Gaelic football as his Shamrocks B team 3-6 (15) beat Sarsfields 1-6 (9).

Fikars 1-2 led Shamrocks B, but faces a bigger challenge against John Mitchels this Sunday.

Best for Shamrocks were Dale Hicks, Fikar, and Scott Ingram.

In the ladies competition, Bardons Renee Moynihan accounted for 3-6 as Shamrocks 8-23 (47) defeated Easts Celts 0-0 (0) to stay second on the ladder.

Moynihan enjoyed a stunning debut as a 15-year-old for Shamrocks some years ago, winning Australasian all-star selection in 2000, but her successor as promising junior may have been found on Sunday when 12-year-old Georgia Bremner made her own debut.

Bremner, of Brookfield, impressed with two points in her first game of Gaelic football, suggesting she will be a future star to watch.

Best for Shamrocks were Moynihan, Narelle Saward, and Monique Ralph. This week they play Sarsfields.

Gaelic and Shamrocks are the winners

17 Jul 2005 - Gaelic football was the winner as the Shamrocks A team strengthened its hold on second place by winning a high quality inaugural All-Shamrocks western suburbs derby in the Queensland Gaelic Football League at Willawong over the weekend.

Shamrocks A 5-17 (32) beat Shamrocks B 1-6 (9) thanks to Justin Rees kicking a career-best 2-4 against the team with which he was playing with just weeks before.

Rees for Shamrocks A led all scorers, but only after the much younger B team trailed just 1-3 to 1-9 at half time, and then played the second half a player down.

Best for Shamrocks A were Rees with his clever scoring, David OMalley, and David McNeilly who came good in the second half. Paul Daly was also prominent in scoring 1-7.

In the ladies match, Harps 8-4 (28) beat Shamrocks 2-7 (13), with Renee Moynihan 1-1 and Sally Cooper 0-3 leading scorers for the green team. Natalie Hughes was best for Harps.

Super Sally scores a record seven

Shamrocks 10-17 (47) beat Souths 1-2 (5) to consolidate second place on the ladder, in advance of the game against defending champions and first-placed Harps this weekend.

Ignition as Rockett and Mayo face-off

The scoring leaders and record holders Billy Rockett and Matt Mayo square up at Gaelic Park this weekend 11 Jul 2005 - The western suburbs Irish connection is looking forward to this weekend like never before, when two westside Shamrocks teams play each other in the Queensland Gaelic Football League for the first time.

Matt Mayo, the leading scorer and record holder for the Shamrocks A team, leads his side against scoring counterpart Billy Rockett in the first western suburbs derby at Gaelic Park, Willawong, at 2pm on Sunday.

Shamrocks A are favoured to win, as they are currently second on the ladder and boast a 9-4 win-loss record this year. The Shamrocks B team are fourth.

However, the sentiment may be with upstart Shamrocks B side which has an average age of just 19-years six years younger than their western suburbs rivals and enjoy no Irish-born players against the four of the A team.

Computer forecast: Shamrocks A by five points 17-12, but the young guns will challenge to the end.

Rees has Shamrocks Bs buzzing

3 Jul 2005 - A brace of goals from Justin Rees allowed Shamrocks to stun the favoured Souths outfit and win its second consecutive game in the Queensland Gaelic Football League at Willawong at the weekend.

The Shamrocks B team 5-6 (21) outscored Souths 3-11 (20) in the second half to win by a solitary point, thanks to Reess best game of his debut season, kicking 2-3 to be just one point short of the team record.

It was his western suburb sides second straight win, and the teams highest ever score against Souths, beating the mark set back in 1998.

With Rees a livewire in the forwards, Laurie Bere was outstanding at wing back, and Glenn Carpenter was valuable in goals.

Shamrocks B team now move ahead of Easts Celts into a tie for second place with Shamrocks A in the Queensland League, with Souths falling to sixth with their only two losses this year coming against the Shamrocks teams.

On Sunday, Shamrocks B will be tested by the strong Easts Celts, while Shamrocks A team play Sarsfields.

A hat-trick by Kim Clist highlighted the Shamrocks domination of Mitchels, winning 7-13 (34) to 0-1 (1).
