Ladies win while men lose form

Shamrocks ladies record another win over Sarsfields

2 June 2003 - Shamrocks ladies posted a strong win over the weekend, while the Shamrocks senior mens continued their form slide on the eve of their Brisbane Shield final appearance.

Shamrocks seniors suffered their third loss in four matches beaten by Sarsfields by two points just days before facing Easts Celts in the final of the 2003 Brisbane Shield this Friday night.

In contrast, Easts beat Souths to snap a five game losing streak, and that was despite most of the Easts senior team also playing a full game in the reserves against Shamrocks that same day.

In the ladies match (pictured), the young Shamrocks beat Sarsfields by 20 points for their second strong win of the year. It is their fourth straight win over Sarsfields, against whom they now hold a 28-1 all-time win-loss record.

Patty Preece led the scoring with 2 goals 2 points to be best on ground, followed by Joann ONeill with 1-2, and Bronwyn Bassett who kicked 1-3.

The Shamrocks senior mens loss to Sarsfields, 1-9-12 to 1-11-14, was their second consecutive loss and their third loss in four matches.

The good news for Shamrocks is that one win came against Easts Celts their opponents in the Brisbane Shield final this week.

In fact, Easts are the only team in the Queensland Gaelic Football League enduring worse form than Shamrocks at the moment, having won only one of their last six games.

Against Sarsfields, fullback Scott Ingram suffered a knee injury which puts him in doubt for this Friday's Brisbane Shield final.

The game on Sunday was in the balance all day with Sarsfields snatching the game late in the day.

Shamrocks were led by Brendan Scandrett who worked tirelessly all day, ably supported in midfield by Paul Rice who is finding form after an early season injury, and David Duguid who deputised at Full back.

Leading scorers were Martin Henry and Brad Kennedy who kicked four points apiece.

In the reserves match, Shamrocks lost to close to the full Easts senior team 4-3-15 to 4-11-23.

Harold Peacock led the scoring with 1 goal 2 points, and best again was Darren McDonnell in goals.

Ageless midfielder Mick Joyce kicked perhaps the longest left-foot goal of his life from outside the 45 metre line.

Mitchels ruin preparation

26 May 2003 - Last years Brisbane Shield winners handed this years finalists Shamrocks a loss over the weekend to ruin preparation for the Shield final next week.

John Mitchels 0-11-11 defeated Shamrocks 0-9-9 despite a good finish by the western suburbs team.

Another slow start and a strong finish, but we missed a few chances and left it a little too late unfortunately, Shamrocks defender David Duguid surmised after the match.

Harvey Evans and Martin Henry led the Shamrocks scoring with 3 points apiece, while Brendan Scandrett, Tom ONeill and Matt Walsh were the best players.

Shamrocks play Easts in the Brisbane Shield final on Friday 6th June.

Easts held in the second half

12 May 2003 - Shamrocks returned to winning ways in the Queensland Gaelic Football League after a remarkable game against Easts Celts at Willawong over the weekend.

Brisbanes western suburbs team kept Easts Celts entirely scoreless in the second half, after Easts had kicked two goals to start the game.

Thanks to renewed defensive pressure after the break, Shamrocks recovered from the big deficit to win 1-9-12 to 2-2-8 for their sixth straight win over Easts dating back to June 2001.

Leading scorers for Shamrocks were Matt Walsh with 1 goal 1 point, and Brad Kennedy 0-4.
