Australasia's best & fairest to Angie Doyle

10 October 2001 - The prestigious Best and Fairest Award for ladies Gaelic football at the 2001 Australasian Gaelic Games in Melbourne this week has been won by Angie Doyle from the Shamrocks club in Brisbane's western suburbs.

The Australasian Gaelic Games is played each year with representative teams from across Australia and New Zealand.

Angie Doyle, and Shamrocks team mate Jacqueline Peacock, were this week named in the Australasian team to compete at the 2002 World Cup in Dublin, Ireland. Four other Queensland representatives will join them.

Angie and Jacqueline have previously teamed up with Edel O'Gorman on the 2000 Australasian team that won the Gaelic football World Cup for the first time last year, with O'Gorman scoring a decisive 1 goal 7 points in the final to secure the now famous overtime victory against North America.

The Australasian awards cap a hugely successful year for the Shamrocks club, in which they won the ladies Queensland Championship for the first time, with Angie Doyle as captain and Jacqueline Peacock as player-coach.

McCaffrey scored Queensland's only goal in the semi final against ultimate champions Victoria, in the state's best finish since 1998. The Australasian mens team is not scheduled to compete at the World Cup until 2004.

Twelve members from the Shamrocks club in Brisbane's western suburbs represented Queensland at the recent Australasian Gaelic Games.

The club continues to search now for more players for the new season that starts in February. Complete this form to register on-line.

Queensland go down fighting

07 October 2001 - Queensland went further into the Australasian Gaelic football ladies championships than ever before, but fell at the last hurdle against Western Australia in Melbourne today.

Western Australia, favourites going into the final, prevailed 1-13-16 to 1-1-4.

Natalie Hughes - from the Shamrocks club in Brisbane's western suburbs - scored Queensland's only goal of the final, and her second of the tournament, after an assist from club-mate Jacqueline Peacock.

"They never took the opportunities, but they never really got the opportunities given to them," Queensland and Shamrocks senior mens player Matt Walsh said from Melbourne after the game, referring to lack of quality ball delivered into the forward line.

Western Australia are proving Queensland's bogey team - this year they were beaten by them in the final, and last year Queensland lost the semi-final to Western Australia by a single point.

Queensland had twice beaten three-time defending champion New South Wales to make the final, and kicked a record score against South Australia including four goals from Jacqueline Peacock.

Shamrocks players Angie Doyle and Jacqueline Peacock fell one title short of recording a unique treble - they were both members of the world champion Australasian team last year, and last month won the Queensland championship with Shamrocks, needing only the Australasian championship to complete the trifecta.

Queensland also lost the Australasian final in the under 18 mens division, losing to Auckland. Queensland were three-time defending Australasian champions going into the tournament.

Queensland play Western Australia in the ladies final

06 October 2001 - Queensland is through to its first Australasian Gaelic football ladies final after beating defending champions New South Wales at the Australasian Gaelic Games in Melbourne tonight.

Queensland kicked with a strong wind in the first half to set up their 2-5-11 to 2-2-8 semi final win, which reduced long-time Queensland association executive Seamus Sullivan and Nicholas Carpenter to tears of joy.

Thanks to the thrilling 3-point victory, Queensland now play Western Australia in the championship decider on Sunday afternoon.

Western Australia start as favourites after beating Queensland by seven points in the opening game of the championship.

However, Queensland were quickly buoyed by a record win over South Australia led by four goals by Jacqueline Peacock from the Shamrocks club in Brisbane's western suburbs.

Drama struck the Queensland ladies team on the morning of the semi final, when they learnt they were disqualified in the win over Victoria the night before, due to playing too many substitutes.

The team regrouped however, to beat the mighty New South Wales team for the second time in the tournament.

The final against Western Australia is scheduled to start at 1:45pm on Sunday.

Queensland is also through to the championship final in the under 18 mens division, where they play Auckland. The final starts at 10:15am Sunday morning.

In the senior mens semi final, Queensland lost gallantly to the tournament favourites Victoria 1-3-6 to 3-10-19.

Queensland's goal was scored by Peadar McCaffrey from the Shamrocks club in Brisbane, who bravely played throughout the championship despite injury.

Queensland through to all semi finals

05 October 2001 -  Queensland has reached the semi finals of all three divisions of Gealic football for the first time ever at the Australasian Gaelic Games after third day action in Melbourne today.

Natalie Hughes - from the Shamrocks club in Brisbane's western suburbs - scored a goal against Victoria today after a slick give-and-go play with club mate Jacqueline Peacock, as Queensland clinched a ladies semi final berth with their third straight win, 2-5 (11) to 1-3 (6).

They play defending champions New South Wales tomorrow, after finishing in second place although equal with both Western Australia and New South Wales with three wins each.

Jacqueline Peacock continued her run of scores with two points, while fellow Shamrocks player Bronwyn Bassett was excellent at wing forward for Queensland scoring one point.

Other Shamrocks players include Angie Doyle, who did not play today due to an ankle injury but is expected back for the semi final, and Hannah Humphrys who today played in goals.

The Queensland senior mens team has qualified for the semi finals for first time since 1998, after drawing 0-7 apiece with Western Australia today.

Shamrocks player Stigsy Lagan kicked the point that drew the game and ultimately secured Queensland a semi final berth.

However, the all-Shamrocks full forward line is suffering - Peadar McCaffrey and Brad Kennedy continue to play despite injury, while Conor Walshe has injured his hamstring and did not play today.

The Queensland under 18 mens team, the three-time defending Australasian champions, have qualified for the semi finals tomorrow.

The finals will be played in Melbourne on Sunday.
