Big Dan Fraser fails to inspire a win 25 June 2001 - The return of championship captain Dan Fraser failed to inspire Shamrocks to a win in their top of the table clash in the Queensland Gaelic Football League over the weekend. Shamrocks were beaten 2-6 (12) to 3-10 (19) by John Mitchel despite being within one point with just minutes remaining. Fraser, who captained Shamrocks to the Queensland championship last year and won the club best and fairest award, has returned to Shamrocks for a two-week stint. He has been playing with the Buffalos AFC in Mt Isa. Willy Shanahan led Shamrocks in the forwards with 2 goals 1 point, while David Duguid and Stuart Meiklejohn were outstanding in defense. Shamrocks also went down in the reserves, losing by 5 points to Harps. In a solid team performance, Shamrocks benefited from good play from Glenn Carpenter, David Duguid and Harold Peacock, however accuracy in front of goal eventually let them down. Louise O'Neill returned from Ireland this week, and rejoined Angie Doyle and Jacqueline Peacock as Shamrocks beat East Celts by nine points. O'Neill, playing in a borrowed pair of boots, scored three goals as Shamrocks won 6-5 (23) to 2-8 (14) to remain second on the ladder. Australasia, with those three Shamrocks in the squad, created history back in October by winning the Gaelic Football ladies World Cup in Ireland. In the senior mens game over the weekend, Shamrocks' hot and cold season continued with a seven point loss to East Celts, despite Anthony Lagan playing well to score all four points. It was a torrid weekend of senior mens football with five players sent off in all matches, including Shamrocks' Luke Devitt who fortunately escapes suspension. See Full Scores and league ladder Hannah's hair being clipped for charity 4 June 2001 - Shamrocks defender Hannah Humphreys this week sacrifices her hair to raise money for the Queensland Cancer Fund. The Queensland Gaelic football representative and Shamrocks fullback will have her head shaved at Shamrocks' city sponsor Auroras on Friday night as part of the "Clip for Cancer" fundraising effort. People wanting to donate to this worthy charity should call Hannah on 0402 454 429 or attend Auroras, Level 1, 142 Albert Street, on Friday, and donate there. The official ceremonies commence 9:30pm. The Friday event is also doubling as a farewell party for Shamrocks import Mary Kelleher who will soon return to Ireland. Kelleher, who played senior football for County Cork and won a junior All-Ireland Championship, spent that last 12 months playing with Shamrocks, and co-captained Queensland at the Australasian Gaelic Games last year where she was named in the Australasian all-star team. The party will start from 7:30pm. See the Queensland Cancer Fund and Auroras websites. Beaten despite strong second half 4 June 2001 - Shamrocks ladies lost their share of the competition lead despite dominating the second half of their match in the Queensland Gaelic Football League over the weekend. The western suburbs side Shamrocks lost to Harps by 9 points, but only after falling behind early and then an outstanding second half recovery. Renee Harper and Bronwyn Bassett were both outstanding in defence, while Kelly Woods again played well in midfield with good delivery upfield. Shamrocks now play East Celts in all divisions at Willawong on Sunday 17th June. |
