Shamrocks ladies playing with style 2nd April 2001 - Shamrocks ladies played stylishly to post their first win of the new Queensland Gaelic Football season at Gaelic Park, Willawong, over the weekend. Natalie Hughes from Carina enjoyed an outstanding debut from midfield as Shamrocks came from behind to beat a good John Mitchel team by 16 points - 4 goals 10 points to 2 goals. Jacqueline Peacock (Brookfield) led the scoring with a season-high 2 goals 3 points for the western suburbs club. Hannah Humphrys (Geebung) was very good at full back, and Mary Kelleher (Kenmore) again solid at centre-back. A talented John Mitchel team totally bamboozled the Shamrocks senior mens, and kept them scoreless to win by 20 points. Amid the disaster, David Shakovskoy from Oxley played solidly in defense for Shamrocks. Talbot, originally from Kerry in Ireland and now living in Greenslopes, scored 1 goal 5 points as the defending Queensland champion Shamrocks beat the 1999 champions East Celts by five points. Brisbane's western suburbs club led by just two points with minutes remaining with Talbot winning possession all over the pitch, before a goal by Brookfield's Owen O'Brien secured the win. Andrew Meiklejohn (Corinda) and Steven Morgan (Oxley) were good contributors up forward, while Glenn Carpenter (Oxley) was solid at fullback. James Marshall (Kenmore) scored his first career point in a good all round performance. East Celts won the reserve grade match by six points, despite an good debut performance by David Dugow (Bardon) for Shamrocks. East Celts won the ladies match by a solitary point, although Mary Kelleher (Kenmore) was excellent at centre back. Jacqueline Peacock (Brookfield) led the scoring for Shamrocks with 1 goal 2 points. Shamrocks teams play the talented John Mitchel and Harps clubs in matches in the second round of the Brisbane Shield at Willawong this Sunday. John Kelleher, who has won a Universities All-Ireland Championship and coached the Co. Cork and Co. Kerry senior ladies football teams, will tutor all Shamrocks teams over the next fortnight starting this Wednesday night 21st March. The injection of championship-winning strategies is a huge boost to Shamrocks as they prepare to play the talented Easts Celts club in all grades to start the Queensland season on Sunday 25th March. Easts won the senior mens Queensland Championship in 1999, but surrendered their title to Shamrocks last year. The western suburbs Shamrocks club train at the Jindalee Recreational Reserve, Wongaburra Street, Jindalee, and all Queensland league matches are played at Gaelic Park, Bowhill Road, Willawong. Shamrocks are still looking for more ladies, junior and mens players. Phone 3374 3130 or complete this form to register your interest on-line. 2001 Season launches this week 16 February 2001 - Defending their Queensland Championship is the goal of Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club starting with the official sign-on day and Season Launch at Jindalee on Sunday 25th February. Almost 100 players are expected to crowd the suburban Jindalee Recreational Reserve, Wongaburra Street, for the season-opening event for the Brisbane's western suburbs club, next Sunday from 12 noon to 3:00pm. Two of Shamrocks' World Cup winners - Jacqueline Peacock (Brookfield) and Angie Doyle (Toowoomba) - will also be there as ladies, mens and junior players all register for the new season. Shamrocks are expected to announce a unique early season program including sessions by an All-Ireland Championship winning coach. Shamrocks senior player training starts Wednesday 28th February, and the Queensland season kicks off on Sunday 25th March. New players are still needed, as well as anyone interested in learning to coach at any level. All those interested should be at the Jindalee Recreational Reserve, Wongaburra Street, Jindalee, between 12 noon and 3:00pm on Sunday 25th February. Shamrocks in contention to play Connaught22 January 2001 - Shamrocks young guns are in contention for the traditional Anzac Day International match against strong Irish provincial team Connaught, with tour dates confirmed this week. The Queensland under 21 team play the Irish under 18 all-stars in the eagerly awaited Gaelic football international at Brisbane's Gaelic Park, Willawong, on Sunday 22nd April. Several young Shamrocks players are in line for state selection, including 19-year-olds Damien Joyce (Westlake), Michael Shakovskoy (Oxley), and Andrew Stevens (Westlake) who last year was Shamrocks award winner for best new player in reserve grade. Three Shamrocks - Dan Fraser, Adrian Darbellay and Stephen Mulligan - played for the Queensland senior team against a star-studded Irish side in last year's Anzac Day International. Connaught coaching staff will also promote Queensland Gaelic football with a Brisbane coaching clinic on Saturday 21st April. While in Australia the touring team will also play the Australasian under 18 team in Melbourne, and New South Wales under 21 team in Sydney. The Brisbane western suburbs Shamrocks club is currently searching for new ladies, mens and junior players, and anyone interested in coaching, for the new season that starts in March.
