SOME VEIWS FROM
THE COALBANK

The shanty at left housed some of the equipment that pulled mine cars up the side of the mountain. As I got closer to the shanty I realized there was still a coal car in it!(right)

The picture at left is rail tracks that were used for mine cars.Either pulled by cable or earlier pulled by mules. At left is the Cameron bridge as seen from the top of the coalbank, near the area the fireworks are launched.

These two items worked together,at left is a ramp that I believe coalcars went up on tracks to dump their loads. At right is the hoist that pulled the cars up the hill from the mine, the wheel on this is around 7 feet in diameter.I wonder just how many feet of cable ran up and down the hill when this thing was in operation!

I found more than coal on the coalbank!Gotta watch your step!(left)A huge pile of boulders covered with spraypainted names.A long hike to make your mark!(right)

A picture of the Glenburn collery and a THANK YOU to Pat from upstate New York for sending me the picture.

For a glimpse of the aftrmath of the coal era, here is a great webpage about the Centralia Pa. mine fire.

HERE is webpage I found in a search with pics of the bath house at the glen burn colliery. This site also has some interesting facts about the railways in Pa.

A great view of town from the top of the coalbank

I suppose I should mention that I am not nor have I ever been a coalminer and I'm no expert on any of these things .I just feel this is a link to our past that very few people have had an opertunity to see.As I walk around up there I can almost hear the clanking of the gears and the squeeling of the wheels on the tracks! And how all those years ago,it was someones job to spend his days up there and make sure they kept running.Almost as pleasant,I'm sure,as the job the men under the ground were doing. If anyone knows the actual names of this equipment or want to add anything, please e-mail me at [email protected].
