One of the most influential bands to emerge from the Mod/Powerpop scene of the eighties, the Jetset was built around the songs of their multi-instrumentalist, Paul Bevoir, releasing five albums during it’s lifespan. There have been numerous re-issues and compilations ever since, particularly in Japan. Bevoir went on to work with other groups including Small Town Parade and wrote for numerous artists including Ed Ball, Roy Hamilton and Japanese duo Puffy. He’s also a well respected sleeve designer working on covers for everyone from Yes to Fleetwood Mac. But it’s that first stab at international renown that has cast the greatest shadow. The Jetset’s songs have now made an impact on several generations of artists and Do You want To Be In The Show showcases this spectacularly. Highlights include The Eddies (U.S.) neo-psychedelic take on “Colour My World,” Rinaldi Sings (UK) dynamic blast on the title track and the Cola Jet Set’s (Spain) wistful rendition of “The Man Who Lives Upstairs,” but there is no shortage of top tracks to be found on this disc. Hearing these tracks leaves you with no doubt that Bevoir is one of the most talented and underrated songwriters to emerge from the eighties, with a catalog full of gems ripe for rediscovery. Whether you listen to the original Jetset classics or these new versions from today’s up and coming pop scenesters, you’ll agree these are great songs that hit all the right targets, full of brash youthful energy, intricate arrangements, harmonies and a surplus of melody. This is the second in a series of tribute albums from Twist/Blindspot dedicated to some of power-pop’s best loved combos, from the seventies to the early nineties. The first volume, featuring groups performing the classic songs of UK Mod sensations Squire, was released in 2005. Upcoming editions include titles dedicated to UK trio The Risk and American power-pop legends 20/20. (JAM/ Blindspot Records 115 is available Dec. 10) KEVIN DONAKER-RING – GUITAR BART MENDOZA – GUITAR ORRICK SMITH – BASS TODD WOOLSEY – DRUMS MARK ZADARNOWSKI – ELECTRONICS/BASS KENNY HOWES – GUITAR EVERYBODY SINGS SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long running San Diego based group, The Shambles, release their sixth album, Desde Ayer, on Dec. 10. The album takes advantage of the bands prolific nature and collects fourteen tracks from a wide variety of studio sources. Geared to both die-hard fans and casual listeners, Desde Ayer includes a number of outtakes from side projects, alternate mixes, demos -and more. Emerging from the power-pop explosion of the early nineties, The Shambles continue to create music that touches on their Mod and sixties pop roots, adding seventies AM radio, Spanish rock and a dash of jangle to the mix. The band has toured extensively in England, Spain, Mexico and the U.S., releasing music in those countries as well as Canada, Sweden, Japan, Germany and Denmark. Desde Ayer tops a hectic year for The Shambles. The past twelve months have seen the band featured on the cover of music magazine, The Troubadour, as well as the release of an all covers album, 20 Explosive Hits, the taping of jingles for Mod Radio UK and numerous concert, radio and TV appearances. No doubt about it, Desde Ayer covers a lot of ground. From uptempo rockers (“More Than This”) to solo acoustic demos (“What You Mean To Me”), these tunes flow together, working as a cohesive album, despite being from a dozen different sessions. It’s the sure mark of solid songwriting, heavy on the melody, energy and hooks. Long time collectors will be particularly interested in three vintage tracks culled from as many unreleased albums recorded by band side projects: Mission: To Mars*, The Rarities and The Andrew Beacock Congregation. Other points of interest: Four of the songs are sung in Spanish. Meanwhile collectors of rock ‘n’ roll ephemera will welcome the non-musical hidden tracks. A number of different producers work is included on Desde Ayer, including Alan Sanderson (The Rolling Stones/Weezer), Gregory Page (The Rugburns, Jason Mraz) and Jason Hee (Buzzkill Romantics, Billy Midnight) with the compilation itself and post production work by Bart Mendoza and frequent collaborator/ Shamble emeritus Mike Kamoo (The Stereotypes/Lights On). Various line ups of the band and a few friends contribute to the proceedings, including Victor Penalosa (The Quarter After/The Fuzztones), Mark DeCerbo (Four Eyes/Rockola), Dylan Martinez (Rookie Card/Static Halo), David Lizerbram (Kite Flying Society) and Danny Cress (The Coyote Problem). Whether you are a long time fan of The Shambles or just discovering their melodic charms, Desde Ayer is essential listening. 1) Una Mujer Por Quien Matar (“A Girl to Kill For” instrumental early mix with live lead guitar) 2) Desde Ayer (FM 94.9 Radio Session) 3) Sin Ti (Acoustic Demo) 4) Un Poco Mejor (Demo) 5) Nadie Te Quiere (Alternate Mix) 6) Sympathy (Demo) 7) Problems of Her Own (Acoustic Demo) 8)Paris Yesterday (The Paul Weller Song) (Demo) 9) What You Mean To Me (Acoustic Demo) 10) More Than This (original mix) 11) Mission: To Mars* - All Sorts 12) The Andrew Beacock Congregation– Give Me One More Sign 13) The Rarities – Happy Birthday 14)The Spring Collection – I Thought That You’d Miss Me For more information please contact: Jeremy Morris Jeremy.morris@juno.com JAM Records www.jamrecordings.com The Shambles E-mail: Bart Mendoza mendozab@juno.com The Shambles MySpace: www.myspace.com/theshambles October 2008 The Shambles official website has been updated - http://www.theshambles.net NEW RELEASES: The Shambles 5th album "20 Explosive Hits" http://www.theshambles.net http://www.myspace.com/theshambles www.jamrecordings.com www.koolkatmuzik.com www.notlame.com Anna Troy "Wait Another Day" - Blindspot 113 - Available from CD Baby, iTunes www.myspace.com/annatroy http://www.myspace.com/blindspotrecordssd cdbaby.com apple.com/itunes The Spring Collection "In Between" (Blindspot 111)- Available from JAM Records, Not Lame http://www.myspace.com/joemendozasd http://www.myspace.com/blindspotrecordssd jamrecordings.com notlame.com FYI - Upcoming San Diego Music Releases, History & Trivia Column This Month: October 2008: Upcoming San Diego Music: Who is in the studio?, Bits & Pieces (SD Music News), Jason Mraz Auction, Jim Croce re-issues, Whats in a Name, Spotlight upcoming album (straight PR on an essential upcoming release: The Focus Group, and Upcoming Album Release Dates, Top 15 http://www.myweekmagazine.com/fyi.phpTop%2015 August 2008 UPCOMING RELEASES: The Spring Collection "In Between" (Blindspot 111) Due September 2008 The Spring Collection's new album, "In Between" (Blindspot 111) premieres next month - it includes new originals, a few tribute album tracks, a couple of new covers, a pair of outtakes and a holiday tune for an excellent album that mixes rock, folk, country and powerpop! Limited to 1,000 copies worldwide, this release joins a roster of re-issues which features rare items of the era including the Plimsouls, The Damned and the Barracudas. The five track disc was originally issued on then band manager Peter "English" Verbugge's (also manager of the Crawdaddy's and involved with such notable San Diego hotspots as the Kings Road Cafe and the Pink Panther) label Dance & Stance Records, distributed by IRS Records offshoot Faulty Products. Musicians on the disc include Bart Mendoza (vocals/guitar) and Kevin Donaker-Ring (guitars) (both later of the Shambles with Mendoza also taking part in work with Rachael Gordon, The Spring Collection, Static Halo and others), David Fleminger (bass - now a highly respected Bay Area engineer /producer) and Paul Brewin (drums later of Drip Tank and Uncle Joe’s Big Ol’ Driver.) The great pop art cover was done by band friend Jerry Cornelius who would go on to work with the Morlock’s etc. This highly collectable disc has changed hands for big money over the past few decades, a fact likely heightened by it’s inclusion in the coffee table book, The Art of Punk Rock, published by Gingko Press in 1998 and since reissued itself. If you are a fan of Mod, Garage, Powerpop or even Pop Art sleeves then Manual Scan’s Plan of Action, will be a necessary addition to your collection.
